I Don't Want to Lose You
The Spinners Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Who do you think you are? Who do you wanna be?
You're the only one that really knows
Maybe you'll be surprised after your search is through
When you find you've just been chasing you

Believe me, I understand
The vision of your mind
But I'm so afraid that the girl you'll find
May not need a man like me

I don't wanna lose you
I love you as you are
I don't wanna lose you
I couldn't love you more, more

Tell me, love will remain
Though we may change

I really think that you have little faith in me
You're the only one I'll ever need
If you really understand how much you mean to me
All your doubts would fade and disappear

Maybe you'll never find
The secrets of your mind
But you've got to try that I realize
And I'll help you all I can

I don't wanna lose you
I love you as you are
I don't wanna lose you
I couldn't love you more, more

Tell me, love will remain
Though we may change

I don't wanna lose you
I love you as you are
I don't wanna lose you
I couldn't love you more

I don't wanna lose you
I love you as you are
I don't wanna lose you
I couldn't love you more

I don't wanna lose you
I love you as you are

I don't wanna lose you
I couldn't

Overall Meaning

love you more

The Spinners’ “I Don’t Want to Lose You” is a classic love song about not wanting to lose someone you love due to their self-doubt and search for self-discovery. The opening lines, “Who do you think you are? Who do you wanna be? You’re the only one that really knows,” suggest that the singer’s partner is going through an existential crisis, questioning their identity and purpose. The singer recognizes this struggle and encourages their partner to continue their search, even though they fear that the partner will find someone who does not need a man like the singer.

The chorus, “I don't wanna lose you, I love you as you are,” communicates how the singer loves their partner unconditionally and does not want them to change, despite their struggles. The lines “Tell me love will remain, though we may change” speak to the singer’s understanding that growth and change can occur in a relationship, but love should remain constant.

In the second verse, the singer pleads with their partner to have more faith in their love and the strength of their relationship, saying “You’re the only one I’ll ever need / If you really understand how much you mean to me / All your doubts would fade and disappear.” The song ends with the repeated chorus that emphasizes the singer’s deep love and desire to not lose their partner.

Overall, “I Don’t Want to Lose You” is a powerful ode to the strength of love, even in the face of self-doubt and personal growth. The lyrics beautifully communicate the singer’s love and support for their partner and their willingness to help them through their struggles.

RIP 🙏 to the last original member of the Spinners, the legendary Henry Fambrough , who is singing lead on this classic tune. So happy he was able to see the Spinners get into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame before he passed on to join the ancestors.

This is one of those ballads by the Spinners that doesn't get the recognition it deserves but it's one of my favorites.
