I lost a lot from letting a girl take my joy. Abandoned my lease, health issues, break downs, suicidal thoughts, and I went broke. I started adopting that mantra you speak of. Now I’m back home with my family at the age of 25 with a lot of debt to recover from. But I can’t go woe is me. Gotta keep moving forward and try again. Sad but it’s life. I think it's very interesting what options you chose to list on how to react to a powerful enemy.

There is also the option of looking that enemy straight into the eye and offering friendship instead.

I'm sure Ryan doesn't read these but maybe others can help. I recently read, I believe it was in one of his daily emails, about things you should do and one of those was stop watching the news. I had already implemented that in my daily life simply out of survival instinct because I had come to realize how it influenced my mindset, my attitude and temperament towards others around me. As soon as I stepped away from that daily flood, I realized just how little the vast majority of it really affects me personally and how much news is manufactured to draw clicks, views.....
Anyway, all that to ask, how do you step away from all that and still keep up with what is important. I mean, even a stoic has to know what's happening in the world around them.

You are asking how to get rid of a bad habit. I believe Aristotle and some Christian philosophers recommend replacing it with a good habit, rather than trying to directly fight the bad habit. The time spent on the new good habit crowds out the bad habit.

A related strategy in battling a vice is to work instead on the opposite virtue.

Maybe just pick 1-2 sources which you feel are fact based and reliable. Then only watch/listen to them once a day (or every 3 days?) and only for 15 minutes total. Most news is in small sound bites, repeated over and over, or maybe worded slightly different, but say the same thing. And unless something really big is happening, every few days is enough. Free yourself from media slavery. I was off for about 2 weeks and felt so much better. Mostly I wanted to know local news because of the weather. Not backtracking into news roulette ever again. Most sources just copy another source or are very unoriginal anyway. Hope this offers another approach.

I studied philosophy, and I've found that the best opinion is to collect the things from everything that makes sense. I've never met anybody who followed the teachings of one person. From stoicism to taoism, there's always at least a couple of things to hold on to.

While I admire so much of Stoic philosophy and see its truth and value I struggle to reconcile the actions of men like Hadrian and Marcus Aurelius towards the non-Roman peoples they waged war against. I guess contradictions such as these are part of life. I fear that sometimes people use Stocism as an excuse for cruelty. I suppose that's always been the case with any belief system.
