Says Paul Berryman of the name: "It was basically just a piss-take on commonly used words in the 90's. Like The Jesus and Mary Chain, 'Jesus Built My Hot Rod', Jesus Lizard, Jesus Jones; there's just heaps of Jesus' out there in the music world so we thought we would have that and super was kind of like a 90s catch word."
The group's debut EP, "Eight Step Rail", was released in May 1996 and spent a couple of months on top of the Australian Independent charts and won a couple of ARIA awards.
All has not always well with the band internally and in 1997 Chris Tennent temporarily left the band. Aaron Tokona from Wellington, New Zealand band Weta filled in, though chose to turn down the band's offer to become a permanent member.
They released their debut album, Sumo, through Warner Music in 1998 and its success in Australia led to a US release. The band has released two subsequent albums, Jet Age, in 2001, and Rock Music, in 2003. All albums charted well in Australia.
Chris Tennant left the band permanently in 1999 and was replaced by Tim Henwood (who has since himself left to concentrate on his work with The Androids). Jason Slack (an unofficial member) has since been playing guitars with the band.
In June 2004, the band split with Warner Music Australia and indicated they would take time off while individial members pursued other projects. McLeod is said to be working on a solo album of material not suited to the band. Her solo single released in 2005 is entitled "Let's Get Together", while her album to be released in the same year is called Beauty Was A Tiger.
Recently there has been much controversy over whether the band has split: a number of articles describe McLeod and Berryman as "former" members. Fans continue to speculate over online message boards, some reasoning that the writers of such articles jump to conclusions after seeing each member doing his/her own thing. The band has so far remained silent on this issue, although the band's website has disappeared.

The Superjesus Lyrics

'Cause dreams are never
Afraid to call you
Now you're alone
And it's not ideal
And nothing helps you to feel
The seasons that you'll never know
And I'll follow through
And I'll follow you
And I know it suits me fine
I was waiting for the longest ride
Shake the fortunes
And knows the waters around
The ocean where you couldn't hide
And I see you run
From anyone when you call
The reasons that you never tried
And I'll follow through
And I'll follow you
And I know it suits me fine
I was waiting for the longest ride
And I was down
And I know it now
And I've wasted all my time
Something's lost along this
Road of mine
And now I've wasted all my time...
The Superjesus's song Milk is a song about lost opportunity and regret. The lyrics tell the story of someone who is lost and alone because their dreams were never realized. They are unable to feel anything and are unable to experience the seasons of life. Despite this, the singer promises to follow the person and stay by their side. The person is running away from others and the reasons they never tried to achieve their dreams. The singer suggests that they have also wasted their time waiting for an opportunity that has not come. The song is a story of lost opportunities, broken dreams, and regret.
One interesting fact about the song is that it was the first track from The Superjesus's debut album Sumo. The band formed in Adelaide, Australia in 1994 and were active between 1994-2004. The band made a comeback in 2013 and is still active today. Another interesting fact is that the song was a commercial success in Australia and peaked at number 23 on the ARIA charts. The band was also nominated for Best New Talent and Best Rock Group at the 1997 ARIA Music Awards.
The song Milk was released in 1997 and received critical acclaim for its powerful melody and lyrics. The song was covered by acoustic folk singer-songwriter Kate Miller-Heidke in 2007. The Superjesus disbanded in 2004, and lead singer Sarah McLeod went on to pursue a solo career. However, the band reunited in 2013 and released an EP called Love and Violence. Milk remains one of the band's most popular and well-known songs.

Lost forever
I have lost something and it seems like I can never retrieve it
'Cause dreams are never
Because dreams are wild and unpredictable
Afraid to call you
But I am terrified to reach out to you
Now you're alone
And now you are all by yourself
And it's not ideal
This situation is far from perfect
And nothing helps you to feel
And nothing seems to make you feel better
The seasons that you'll never know
The experiences that you will never get to have
And I'll follow through
But I will keep my promise
And I'll follow you
And I will be there for you
And I know it suits me fine
And I am content with this arrangement
I was waiting for the longest ride
I have been waiting for this for a very long time
Shake the fortunes
Let's change our destiny
And knows the waters around
And let's navigate through the uncertain waters together
The ocean where you couldn't hide
The overwhelming emotions that you were trying to bury
And I see you run
And I see you trying to escape
From anyone when you call
You avoid seeking help from anyone because you don't want to seem weak
The reasons that you never tried
The excuses that hold you back from trying
And I'll follow through
But I will still be there for you
And I'll follow you
And I will follow you wherever you go
And I know it suits me fine
And I am perfectly okay with this
I was waiting for the longest ride
I have been waiting for this for a very long time
And I was down
I was feeling low
And I know it now
But I am aware of it now
And I've wasted all my time
And I've spent all this time fruitlessly
Something's lost along this
Something important has been lost during this journey
Road of mine
That I've been travelling down for some time now
And now I've wasted all my time...
And now I feel like I have wasted all my time so far
