The band evolved into a nine-piece ensemble with a light-hearted and humorous performing style.

The name "Temperance Seven" is a subtle play on words: the number seven being "one under the eight". That there were nine members or "one over the eight" implied intemperance.

They have links to Monty Python and the Rolling Stones.

There were 6 kids in my family and for my Dad’s birthday one year, my Mom played this on the piano(it was my Dad’s favorite song), and she has done of us playing combs with waxed paper over them and other hitting pots and pans with wooden spoons-I’ll never forget that ❤️🤗

I was an Army broadcaster in Eritrea back in the day,
and played this tune on-air (station KANU-AM-FM) before I came back in 1966.
Very distinctive for sure. Later that year, I saw topless strippers grinding away to it in cages
on a bar in Watertown, NY - what a trip!

The band shown here was not the group of musicians who recorded the song. The singer here is not original singer John Carter but Alan Klein aka 'Tristam, Seventh Earl of Cricklewood'. Original session drummer Henni Henderson was the only one of the original studio musicians who carried over from the studio recording to this version of the band which had to be put together by songwriter Geoff Stephens after there were requests for the band to tour and record a full album.

As I recall (which means that I could well be wrong), this record was just something a group of studio musicians did while screwing around after a recording gig. Because of their studio jobs, they couldn't tour when the record became a surprise hit, so another band had to play the part. The Bonzos were offered the gig. I can't remember why they couldn't do it. Would have been very cool!

I'm a Millennial and was born 20 years after this song was in regular rotation, but I grew up hearing it on what were called "oldies" stations back in the 90's and it has long been a favorite of mine thanks to its quirkiness. I think this song is so "weird" that it is ironically timeless and will never get pigeonholed into an "era" like so much music of 1966.

Looks like it was written and produced by Stephens; he formed a band to make the record but was not in it; Carter sang it on the record but is that Carter on the video? Was he a horn player? Or just faking that? The "touring band" was almost all different guys from the record. Carter didn't stick around long.
