The band evolved into a nine-piece ensemble with a light-hearted and humorous performing style.
The name "Temperance Seven" is a subtle play on words: the number seven being "one under the eight". That there were nine members or "one over the eight" implied intemperance.
They have links to Monty Python and the Rolling Stones.

Oh my gosh!!! My mom used to play and dance to this song when I was little!!! What a great memory!! ❤❤

This is why I love music of that era, no obsession with genre. Any song that caught the public’s interest could become a hit. Here we have a 1920’s type of music becoming a major hit.
@MrGroganmeister
Possibly the world’s most stupid song. But it ‘s hilarious and performed by a bunch of pretentious wankas.

Exactly
@wesleycook7687
I had heard Rudy Valee in old movies singing through a megaphone but to hear a 60s band actually have a hit using a technique from the late 20s was a surprise..
@KingpinTBM
Interesting observation, very true

There were 6 kids in my family and for my Dad’s birthday one year, my Mom played this on the piano(it was my Dad’s favorite song), and she has done of us playing combs with waxed paper over them and other hitting pots and pans with wooden spoons-I’ll never forget that ❤️🤗

What A Fantastic Gift Cathy.Lol.
@TheGreatPresenter
That sounds like a lot of fun. You must have had a great upbringing with parents like that.

I was about 6 or 7 when I first heard this song and over 50 years later, I still love it, it brings back memories of when I first heard it all those years ago.
