The Girl's Alright With Me
The Temptations Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

This little girl of mine
I wanna say that she's so fine
And each and every day
I make sure she has her way
Now we don't feel tied down
Although our hearts are bound
I don't have to chase her all over town
My baby she's always around

The girl's alright with me
You know the girl's alright, yes

The girl's alright with me
You know the girl's alright

Now she's so good to me
I guess that's why I feel fancy free
Just to see the glow in her eyes
Makes me once again realize
I love her with all of my heart
And I know we'll never never part
I never heard about or caught her playin'
I guess that's why you always hear me sayin'

The girl's alright with me
You know the girl's alright

The girl's alright with me
You know the girl's alright

When I visit at her home
Other fellas never, never ring her phone
She let's them know just where they stand
She tells them all that I'm her man
And when we're out on a date
All the fellas wait till I walk away
They try to beat my time
She tells them in a nice way she's mine, all mine

The girl's alright with me
You know the girl's alright

The girl's alright with me (everyday)
You know the girl's alright, you know, you know that

The girl's alright with me me (in every way)

My eyes well up with tears when I realize how good these times were. And how this generation will never know what they’ve missed. I was 7 when this song came out and Motown was still the new kid on the block. A New York kid to the core (still am). Life was sooo good for everybody I knew. This song came out in the spring and by the summer you just heard it everywhere. It just seemed to be floating through the air. Those big horns at the intro. I used to watch the adults snap their fingers to this new kind of music. There was a lot of turmoil in the country but not on my block in the bronx. Life moved slow and people were happy. So sad that it’s gone. Never thought it would end. Sing these kind of lyrics to a young girl now and she’d look at you like you crazy. Love? What’s that?

SAD BUT TRUE

Profoundly true

You stated it precisely! Ex New Yorker here, Lower East Side. Brings back memories of partner dancing. We'll never see the likes of Motown again, sadly.

My brother in Christ, when this song came out, cops were still jailing people for being gay in the US.
The music is good, the times were absolutely not.
My generation ain't missing out on either.

I was a trainee teacher and I played this in my car en route to teacher training college.
I am now 68 years old and recovering from surgery for cancer but this wonderful music still resonates.
I had the honour to be one lad’s best man at his wedding but stood at the graveside of one of my lads who was out of reach and took 8 bullets to the chest.
I am privileged to have once been a member of the teaching profession.
