This Is What It Feels Like
The Twins Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I stand alone in a cavern oh so deep
The tar-imbued darkness offers seldom sleep
But, alas, I’m home alone, tangled in the sheets
Oh, is this what it means to dream
My eyes adjust to the light of day
A morning-delirious psychedelic breakaway
My eggshell mind invents a safe escape
Oh, is this what it means to be awake
I visit the world, my smile stapled to my cheeks
The sharp, unfolded back stabs every stranger I try to meet
I unpin myself, focused only on being me
Oh, is this what it means to finally breathe
Tears are streaming from my eyes
I’ve learned life can be more than compromise
In spite of rain, a tattered, war-torn cry

Oh, this is what it means to be alive
This is what it means to be alive

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Twins' song "This Is What It Feels Like" touch on various themes of self-discovery and emotional introspection. The opening lines depict a sense of isolation and solitude, with the singer standing alone in a deep cavern. The darkness is described as being imbued with tar, symbolizing the heaviness and difficulty of the situation. The reference to seldom sleep suggests a restlessness or inner turmoil within the singer's mind.

Moving forward, the lyrics explore the contrast between dreaming and being fully awake. The reference to being tangled in the sheets suggests a sense of confusion and entanglement, possibly representing the singer's struggles in navigating their own thoughts and emotions. The mention of the eyes adjusting to the light of day signifies a transition to a new phase or perspective. The morning-delirious psychedelic breakaway suggests a sudden moment of clarity or revelation, where the singer's mind invents a safe escape. This could reflect a desire to find solace or respite from the challenges they face in their waking life.

The next paragraph delves into the singer's interactions with the outside world. The smile stapled to their cheeks indicates a forced or artificial happiness, suggesting they may be hiding their true emotions or putting on a facade for others. The mention of the sharp, unfolded back stabbing every stranger they try to meet implies a sense of distrust or difficulty in establishing meaningful connections. However, the line "I unpin myself, focused only on being me" showcases a turning point, where the singer chooses to prioritize their own authenticity and self-expression. This line highlights the importance of embracing oneself and finding one's own identity.

In the final paragraph, the lyrics take a more uplifting turn. The mention of tears streaming from the singer's eyes indicates a release of pent-up emotions, potentially suggesting a cathartic moment of realization or acceptance. Learning that life can be more than compromise implies a recognition that there is more to existence than simply settling for less. The reference to a tattered, war-torn cry amidst the rain signifies resilience and strength in the face of adversity. Ultimately, the conclusion "this is what it means to be alive" encapsulates the overall message of the song, emphasizing the importance of fully embracing and experiencing life's ups and downs, both the struggles and the moments of joy and self-discovery. It suggests that true aliveness comes from acknowledging and embracing the full range of emotions and experiences that life has to offer.

I don’t like the new years.. The first few months I keep on thinking it’s the previous year and don’t accept the fact that it’s a new year.

I really liked how Lucy helped Natalie. That’s the right way to show she loves her brother. I kind of hoped lucy and Justin would stay together

Yeah, why wasn't this a New Year's Eve related story. Don't get wrong, this story was really interesting, but it would've been nice to see an MSA story that's New Years, just like they did in Halloween.

Title for an MSA New Year's Eve story

" A New Year Kiss That Change My Life "

It would be about a girl named Nicole, who prefers to the name Nikki, had a rough year in 2023, with her troubles at school, her parents getting divorced, with the inclusion of her dad leaving her mom with nothing. But, she decides to change all that at the New Year's Eve party, that all the popular kids were going, including her crush, Bruce (who was both most popular and hottest guy at school). When she showed up at the party, not only was Bruce there, but his sister, Sarah, was there as well. She was the most popular school, who seemed to reject any guy who asked her out. She also picked on Nikki ever since they were in 7th grade together. As soon as the countdown began, Nikki walked towards Bruce to see if she could give him her New Year kiss, but when it reached zero, the lights went out, and Nikki was kissing someone (thinking that it was Bruce), but when the lights returned, she realize that she wasn't kissing Bruce, but instead his sister, Sarah. She was worried that she might slap her or something, but instead, she just stood there as a statue.
