Independence Day
The Union of Sinners & Saints Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Listen to our declaration, listen to our testament
We've been given a revelation, we are sure of where we stand
So let the banner be unfurled, we've found the light of hope in a dying world

Hear the myth of modern man, you're the god of your own land
They call you weak a spineless fool, say you've given up your right to rule
But I have been to the land of me and I know I was never free
Freedom came when I gave it all away

Call it Independence Day, call it Independence Day
Let the rockets blaze across the sky
Raise the flag of faith up high
Let the doubters call it what they may
It's Independence Day

The world can crown another hundred kings but I believe in a better dream
They may call it slavery but the biggest chain I knew was me
So let the idols tumble down
The walls of lies crumble to the ground
I know where salvation can be found
Let the idols tumble down

Call it Independence Day, call it Independence Day
Let the rockets blaze across the sky
Raise the flag of faith up high
Let the doubters call it what they may
It's Independence Day

So join in the celebration
It's the birth of a holy nation
As people of light we are proud to say

Call it Independence Day, call it Independence Day

Let the doubters call it what they may, 'cause we call it Independence Day
It's Independence Day

Overall Meaning

The song "Independence Day" by The Union of Sinners & Saints is a declaration for religious freedom and personal independence. The lyrics urge listeners to listen to the band's testimony and testament of faith, emphasizing that they have found hope in a dying world. The band sets itself apart from the dominant culture that often calls those who relinquish their rights to rule as spineless and foolish. Instead, they proclaim that freedom came to them when they surrendered everything to God. The use of the phrase "Independence Day," normally associated with national freedom, is expanding to spiritual and personal freedom.

The band is calling for the idols and myths of the modern world to be pulled down as salvation can only be found in a personal relationship with God. With the declaration to let the idols tumble down and the walls of lies crumble to the ground, they make an allusion to the Biblical story of Jericho. This song is an uplifting reminder for listeners of the freedom that can be achieved through a life lived for God.

We all focus on John's performance here, which was spot on, but look at the band who is making the awesome music, that takes skill, and I loved watching the drummer. Crazy good skills! Nice job y'all!

Love that John still has added some of the old Petra rifs.  Hosted him as a single worship show at Lackland AFB 23 years ago and he is still awesome as ever!!

I love listening to this song this time every year. This version was epic! Great job guys, it's a perfect mash up of Petra/Whiteheart. The only thing it could use is Gersh or Lawry playing keys. :)
