Leavin'
The Wheeler Boys Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I got my toothbrush, socks and drawers,
A little money and my fingers crossed.
A little gas in the tank and a whole lot of anticipation and lots of balls.
As a young child I would toss
coins in wishing wells money lost
On a hope and a dream
and a whole lotta green and a little bit of alcohol.
Jumped back up every time
Like a jack in the box unwind-
ing I mean i'm back to the grind.
Tell my folks I said good bye,
this aint how I pictured things:
I thought by now I'd have made more progress.
Im worried bout bills and things,
And everybody's talking bout shiny objects.
No more half-hearted efforts
on my part my hardest lesson so far in my 27
years of making bad decisions.
Here's to makin gads of millions,
gold plated toilet money,
enough money to feed the children,
buy every little girl a pony.
But I gotta go get it first.
I hope every one understands
that I wanna be around more often
but right now I gotta take this chance.
Up the ante, go all in,
and I cannot afford not to win.
Ill be back when the seasons change I hope we get to talk again.

This time I'm thinking clear
Seen the light, I'm leavin' here
Saddle up n' mosey on
I know I'm strong, but still I fear
And I still fear you near me
Listen to the wind you'll hear
When you look to the moon know I'll be
Some place thinkin' of you dearly
Clearly it's about time I said "a dieu"
A tout mes folk
Quoi qu'il arrive I keep you close
Pour vous aussi I walk this road
That same ‘ol tale you've had it told
a thousand times and yet it's new
when I think I'm losin' it
I jus look to the sky and it'll still be blue
Don't think I'm leavin for those reasons
Cuz it's still you
And it may be seasons ‘til we meet again
But it's still true
You had my heart
And still do, I will prove
To you and all the world
So let me make it happen
This I'll do

Cuz I'm leavin'
I don't have work
If I need more I'm on that road
So I'm leavin'
I might be right back
If I don't come back home
Tell my mother I'm o.k.

Tell my pops I'm on my way
Tell my brother that he'll do this on his own

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Wheeler Boys’ song Leavin’ depict a young person leaving their home with little to no possessions to find a better life. They have a little gas in their tank, some money, and their fingers crossed. As a child, the singer tossed coins into wishing wells, wishing and dreaming of a better life with plenty of money and maybe even some alcohol. They thought by this time in their life they would have made more progress, but all they hear is talk about shiny objects, and their bills are worrying them. They’ve learned from their half-hearted efforts so far and aim to make plenty of money to feed every child and buy every little girl a pony. They’ll be back when the seasons change and they hope to talk again.

The singer is thinking more clearly now and is leaving their old life behind to find something better. They’re afraid, but they know they’re strong. They need to leave, but they’ll still be thinking about their loved ones. The singer acknowledges that they’ve heard the same old tale a thousand times, but it’s still new to them. They turn to the sky, which is always blue, for comfort when they think they’re losing it. They’re leaving, but it’s not because of their loved ones, it’s for them. They’ll prove to them and the world that they can make it happen.
