The camera is kissing me
The telephone'll make you real
In sync and hours of sympathy
The wind is out but you can't feel
But you can lie, lie, lie, lie
The wind is out but you can't feel
But you can lie, lie, lie, lie
'Cause they know ya
How do you know
'Cause they know ya
How do you know
'Cause they know ya
How do they know
'Cause they know ya
Back in our production city
Sat here all against the wall
The flower girls are toxic to me
They sleep with me
They bash and call
The wind is out but you can't feel
But you can lie, lie, lie, lie
The wind is out but you can't feel
But you can lie, lie, lie, lie
'Cause they know ya
How do you know
'Cause they know ya
How do you know
'Cause they know ya
How do they know
They don't know ya
All in my head I don't think so
The question you're asking is fine
All in my head I don't think so
The question you're asking is fine
How would it feel
How would it feel
Are you ever gonna let me down?
Are you ever gonna let me down?
Are you ever gonna let me down?
I can't decide
'Cause they know ya
How do you know
'Cause they know ya
How do you know
'Cause they know ya
How do they know
I don't know ya
All in my head I don't think so
The question you're asking is fine
All in my head I don't think so
The question you're asking is fine
How would it feel
How would it feel
How would it feel
How would it feel
The Whigs's song "Production City" is an introspective track that explores themes of loneliness, identity and disingenuousness in the context of a vapid production city. The lyrics start off with an ambiguous set of lines that seem to talk about the sensation of being a part of a world that is synthetic and artificial. The camera is "kissing" the singer, while the telephone is making someone "real". The lines "In sync and hours of sympathy" hint at a sense of disconnection and alienation from the world. The singer can't feel the wind, but they can lie about feeling the sensation. This sets the tone for the rest of the song.
The second verse starts with the line, "Back in our production city," which sets up the location of the song as a city that's designed for generating mass-produced content. The singer then talks about the "flower girls" who are toxic and sleep with him, which could represent a sneering, greedy system that corrupts every aspect of your being for their profit. The chorus then repeats, emphasizing the singer's lack of understanding or connection to the world around them, and the realization that they don't really know anybody.
Overall, "Production City" seems to be a commentary on a corrupt, disingenuous world that values production and conformity over introspection and individuality. The song's lyrics convey a sense of isolation and exhaustion with the pressure to fit into a mass-produced society.
