SPARK
The Wild Colonials Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I knew love had to change so I held your hand more tightly
And when I asked you to leave you smiled at me politely
Please forgive my grief I look like I have plenty
And still I asked you for more til I leave you feeling empty

The spark is gone but the love lives on
The spark is gone but the love lives on
The spark is gone but the love lives on

Even though I'm far away I pull the strings more tightly
And lying in my bed today I remember I cried for you nightly
Even though my life is long sometimes in the ??darkest ????
And still I asked you for more til I leave you feeling empty

The spark is gone but the love lives on
The spark is gone but the love lives on
The spark is gone but the love lives on

Two continents?? and a rainy day
couldn't wash the truth away
I wake up calm in the dead of night
and knew in my heart that this wasn't right
Two continents?? and a rainy day
couldn't wash the truth a waaaayyy

Two continents?? and a rainy day
couldn't wash the truth away
I wake up calm in the dead of night
and knew in my heart that this wasn't right

Two continents?? and a rainy day
couldn't wash the truth a waaaayyy

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Spark" by The Wild Colonials express the anguish of a person who knows that their relationship is falling apart, but they cannot bring themselves to end it. The first verse describes how the singer tries to hold on to love by tightening their grip on their partner's hand and asking for more. But despite their efforts, the spark in their relationship is gone, leaving only the love, which they cling to even as they feel empty inside. The chorus repeats this melancholic sentiment, underscoring the idea that true love can endure even as the passion fades away.

The second verse adds some more detail to the story. The singer is physically distant from their partner, but they still try to control the situation from afar, pulling the strings more tightly. In their memories, they cry nightly for their lover, even though they know that their life still has some good moments, sometimes hidden in the darkest corners of their mind. The singer is caught in a cycle of wanting more but experiencing less, and yet they cannot let go of the love that still lives on, even if the spark is gone.

Overall, "Spark" is a poignant song about the difficulty of letting go of a fading relationship. The lyrics are evocative and filled with emotion, capturing the sense of loss and longing that comes with an ending. The repetition of the chorus emphasizes the idea that even though the spark may be gone, love can still survive, giving hope to those who have experienced a similar situation.

Ahhh Finally someone put this song up here!  This is my first discovery of the Amazing Angela McKluskey back in 1994!  "Victim" is my other very favorite track on this album which I don't see up here yet .   Thanks for posting!

@billymont7

Wont let me reply so hopefully you see this, but I've added Victim for ya.  Really the whole album is just perfection though.  I still have my promotional CD from '94 and I dust it off from time to time.  =]
