You Can't Live There Forever
The World Is a Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid to Die Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Your fingers are a distant sky
That you shove into your mouth
To block the whole sun out
It's better than living in the light
To die over exposed so you fight
And that′s alright
You're formless in the night
And that′s alright
What do you think is going right in your life?
What can you know about life if you′ve never died?
You think that the world is alright
But that's a lie
′Cause we're afraid to die
And that′s alright
Where is the action?
Where are the streets that take you to bed?
What is your name and what do you do here?
We have the same thoughts clouding our heads
Formless shapes in the darkness
We are as harmless as the thoughts in our heads
Drinking poison and chewing on concrete
Burning holes in the sheets on our beds
We think that the world is alright
We think that the world is alright
And that's a lie
The beginning of the song, "There's tiny worlds inside your mind, your fingers are a distant sky", seems to be referring to the idea that one's own thoughts and inner emotions can create entire worlds. The mention of shoving fingers into one's mouth to "block the whole sun out" suggests the idea of self-censorship or numbing oneself in order to avoid the pain or discomfort of facing reality. This is contrasted with the idea of living "in the light", which may represent facing the truth no matter how harsh it may be.
The lyrics seem to be exploring the idea of escapism and avoidance from confronting life's challenges. The line "What do you think is going right in your life?" questions whether or not one is truly aware of the reality of their circumstances, and the line "What can you know about life if you've never died?" suggests that those who have never experienced true suffering or mortality may not be able to fully understand and appreciate the value of life.
The final verse about "formless shapes in the darkness" seems to be a reminder that everyone experiences their own struggles and insecurities, and that it's important to empathize with and support others even if their experiences are different from our own.

This song makes me feel nostalgic, and idk why.
In 2015 I was writing my memoir. I listened to this song alot to help me get in the mood of remembering my adolsence. It just brought me back to a special place.
My memoir was published in March 2016.
Thank you, TWIABP.

this song feels like it'd be in the ending of a super cliche coming of age movie- I absolutely love it.

there is something beautifully haunting about the combination of the band name, the music and the album cover.
