Let's Get It On
The Meters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've been really tryin', baby
Tryin' to hold back this feeling for so long
And if you feel like I feel, baby
Then, c'mon, oh, c'mon

Let's get it on
Ah, baby, let's get it on
Let's love, baby
Let's get it on, sugar
Let's get it on

We're all sensitive people
With so much to give
Understand me, sugar
Since we've got to be here
Let's live
I love you

There's nothing wrong with me
Loving you, baby no no
And giving yourself to me can never be wrong
If the love is true

Don't you know how sweet and wonderful life can be
I'm asking you baby to get it on with me
I ain't gonna worry
I ain't gonna push, won't push you baby
So c'mon, c'mon, c'mon, c'mon, c'mon, baby
Stop beatin' 'round the bush

Let's get it on
Let's get it on
You know what I'm talkin' 'bout
C'mon, baby
Let your love come out
If you believe in love
Let's get it on
Let's get it on, baby
This minute, oh yeah
Let's get it on
Please, let's get it on

C'mon, c'mon, c'mon, c'mon, c'mon, darlin'
Stop beatin' 'round the bush
Oh, gonna get it on
Threaten' you, baby
I wanna get it on
You don't have to worry that it's wrong
If the spirit moves ya
Let me groove ya good
Let your love come down
Oh, get it on

C'mon, baby
Do you know the meaning?
I've been sanctified

Girl, you give me good feeling
I've been sanctified

Overall Meaning

The first verse of The Meters' Let's Get It On deals with the struggle of holding back true emotions for too long. The singer is trying to control his feelings for a significant other but arrives at a point where he longs for their acknowledgement of reciprocated love. "If you feel like I feel, baby / Then c'mon, oh, c'mon" reveals that he has been waiting for a sign that his lover feels the same way he does.

The chorus of the song is passionate and urgent, urging his lover to take action and let their love guide them. "Let's love, baby / Let's get it on, sugar / Let's get it on" implies that the singer's emotions are so powerful that they can only be expressed in a physical sense. He wants to be intimate with his lover and have their love become a physical manifestation.

The second verse highlights the vulnerability of people and the need to embrace life and love without hesitation. The singer wants his lover to understand him and listen to his wishes, as they want the same things. His proclamation of love towards his lover is confident and resolute: "There's nothing wrong with me / Loving you, baby no no / And giving yourself to me can never be wrong / If the love is true."

Overall, The Meters' Let's Get It On is a soulful rendition of a desire to fully express love physically and emotionally. It's a plea for the reciprocation of love and a call to embrace vulnerability and let love take the lead.

I was a teenager learning guitar and just starting to play in bands when this came out. When I heard it the first time, it completely blew my mind! I listened to almost nothing else for months. Even now, this album has some of the best guitar work I've ever heard. A true classic and a significant event of my youth!
