Let's Cool One
Thelonious Monk Lyrics

Revvin' up your engine
Listen to her howlin' roar
Metal under tension
Beggin' you to touch and go

Highway to the Danger Zone
Ride into the Danger Zone

Headin' into twilight
Spreadin' out her wings tonight
She got you jumpin' off the deck
And shovin' into overdrive

Highway to the Danger Zone
I'll take you right into the Danger Zone

You'll never say hello to you
Until you get it on the red line overload
You'll never know what you can do
Until you get it up as high as you can go

Out along the edges
Always where I burn to be
The further on the edge
The hotter the intensity

Highway to the Danger Zone
Gonna take it right into the Danger Zone
Highway to the Danger Zone
Ride into the Danger Zone

Highway to the Danger Zone
Gonna take it right into the Danger Zone
Highway to the Danger Zone
Ride into the Danger Zone

Highway to the Danger Zone
Gonna take it right into the Danger Zone
Highway to the Danger Zone
Ride into the Danger Zone
...

I wish those of you that give thumbs down to these tremendous pieces of music would say why.

This music is very creative, enduring, very technical yet not rigid, inspiring, soul, heart and ear sturring. The players are one of a kind and these songs have almost no parallels in exposition, execution, and sonic elocution! Stop trying to categorize this music and just listen with an open heart, mind, body and spirit. If the music touches you that is all it needs to do. Listen many times to this music and you will learn something. You cannot overstand if you just listen for a couple of times. It took years to develop these players and their art. You cannot make a logical or truly heartfelt summation in a few munites or you are cheating yourself!

When players say they got it, they are usually allowed to have the floor to solo and/or to stroll in the vernacular: to play without the piano or totally unaccompanied!
It is a very powerful aspect of the true democracy that exist in the music, unlike the polyticks of politics.

Peace, Love, and Over-standing!

Monk was the coolest cat of all time....there ain't no doubt. Every time I hear someone say something like "Oh, he wrote some great songs, but he wasn't one of the best piano players in jazz" I just laugh and laugh at that fool. I've been listening to Monk for over 50 years, and he is STILL fresh as a daisy! I hear his influence in bands like Weather Report & Medeski, Martin & Wood

@William L. I love Monk because he takes his on way to reach the goal.

@Maick95 You'd be surprised by some of the so called "jazz cats" I've heard utter this type of nonsense - maybe you'd be surprised, or maybe not.
It usually happens while Monk is comping behind a sax solo by Charlie Rouse or Johnny Griffin or whomever, and I'll see that my fellow is listening intently (apparently), and at a certain point I'll detect the quizzical tilt of his head - it is at this point I know I won't have long to wait for The Statement Absurdum. What I hear most is "He's hitting wrong notes." That is when I bray like a mule - </;-)
Monk's playing may not be pretty, but it is always beautiful...
PS - I just finished watching a terrific film featuring Monk on Netflix. It is called "Thelonious Monk: Straight, No Chaser" . Check it out.

I can assure you that the ones who say that don't listen to that much jazz anyway.

Out of all the many Monk tunes, this is the one I like best. Griffin does a great job on this.
