Don't
Them. Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
To the days of yesteryear
You cannot live on in the past
Don't look back
An' I've known so many people
They're still tryin' to live on in the past
Don't look back, whoa no-oh
If I could call back
All those days of yesteryear
I would never grow old
And I'd never be poor
But darlin', those days are gone
Oh, yeah
Stop dreaming
And live on in the future
But darlin', don't look back
Whoa, no-no
Don't look back
Whoa-whoa
"Don't Look Back" by Them is a soulful and reflective song that encapsulates themes of nostalgia and the bittersweet experience of growing up. The lyrics suggest that living in the past is a futile endeavor and can impede one's ability to move forward and make the most of the future. Instead, the song encourages listeners to embrace the present and focus on building a better future for themselves. This is a common theme in many coming-of-age songs, but "Don't Look Back" is particularly striking due to the poetic and introspective lyrics and Van Morrison's soulful delivery. The song embodies a timeless quality that has made it a classic in the decades since its release.
The song is also notable for the catchy guitar riffs and driving rhythm section. The combination creates a groovy and upbeat vibe that provides a satisfying contrast to the introspective lyrics. The catchy guitar riffs make the song perfect for dancing or singing along to, while still retaining its contemplative nature. Overall, "Don't Look Back" is a beautiful and poignant song that stands the test of time.

I don't care for any pseudo macho shit such as being tough or anything
but the fact is few movies or songs get me to shed a tear
and I value very much those that do
this song's lyrics and feeling do
in this version
I love Van's singing most of the time
he's one who'll really get to make me feel good (glad tidings, the way young lovers do, Jackie Wilson said, brown-eyed girl...) or deeply, nostalgically moved, heartfelt (this)
sometimes, kinda paradoxically both at the same time (and it stoned me)

Me and my husband married each other with our feet in our favorite river. This was our wedding song. We couldn’t really dance in the water so we held each other and swayed while this played. Best day of my life.

I've always loved the watery piano they used for this song. Such melancholy and passion co-mingled...ahhhh....good times and sad times all rolled into one bittersweet jumble. Step on the gas and wipe that tear away.

Watery. I have felt that since 1967, but couldn’t name it. You found exactly the right word.

Nice comments. Beautiful cover of a John Lee Hooker tune. I wonder how Van Morrison got a hold of that song.

My brother Bill Farley was the engineer on this track,he recorded the first two albums in Regent Sound Studios,4 Denmark Street,London,WC2. Regent was a very basic little studio, but as you can hear Bill got a great sound. Best Wishes, John Farley.
