For me, Fats is an organ man. He piano playing is terrific but its the sound of the pipes that I love.

From the way he's cranking sound waves out of that thing, the whole building was probably creaking. And his touch is so fluid and light. It's like the sound is retaining all its mass but flows weightlessly though his hands.

organ playing is an ultimate test for musicality ; A no proper dynamics instrument permit only to express yourself by the subtile use of rythm and vocal leading...terrific for so much people. Fats Waller was truly a giant.

Another magnificent track! Although Britain has produced great pipe organists such as Reginald Dixon (whom I listened to
a few times at the Tower Ballroom, Blackpool, when very young), Sandy Macpherson (a BBC radio favourite), Henry Croudson
and Robin Richmond, Fats surely ranks among these pipe organists as one of the all time greats.

He could easily have earned a degree in music from any university. Dudley Moore did a degree in organ playing.

That thing which really does the swing is the pumping left hand. By some reason, most musicians of today just play chords on beats 2 and 4. I learned to do all four beats on the accordion bass many years ago and that works great. It took some practice until the poor index finger could stand the constant pumpin'... but it is the handling of that pumpin' that makes it swing, accordion, organ or piano. Fats knew his trade so well...

Yes that's right. It's still in use today if a player wants to provide a 30's-style swing. Some organists refer to it as a "Chicago" left-hand.

Same here. There is a beautiful 1927 Kimball theater pipe organ in the Broadway theater in Pitman NJ that is played at intermissions and before shows. I helped restore it years ago and now it is maintained and being used

Your welcome. Thanks to my friend Joe Bussard of Frederick Maryland for introducing me to Thomas "Fats" Waller's 78 rpm records. Joe said that in Camden NJ the church organ was right near the Victor recording studio.
