Heimwärts
Thrudvangar Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Blutrot erstrahlt der Horizont,
glatt sind die rauen Wogen.
Der Nordstern blitzt am Himmel,
er weist den Drachen den Weg.

Das Kreischen der Möwen erfüllt die Luft,
zu erkennen schon die dichten Wälder,
Strand und Ufer des festen Landes,
die Heimat der nordischen Krieger.

Entfacht wird das helle Feuer
in den Langhaus' großer Runde.
Skalden erzählen die Geschichten der Fahrt
und geheilt werden die Wunden der Schlacht

Kaum sind die Lieder verklungen,
der Kopf noch schwer vom Met,
da rufen der Männer Hörner
zur nächsten großen Fahrt hinaus.

Refrain:
Wind füllt die Segel,
druch Sturm und Nebel,

mit Kraft und Ehre
durchfahren wir der Welten Meere.

Overall Meaning

The first stanza paints a vivid picture of a blood-red horizon, with smooth waves that belie their roughness. The North Star shines bright in the sky, and serves as a guide for the dragon. The second stanza is filled with the sounds of seagull cries and the recognition of the dense forests and shores of the homeland of the fierce Nordic warriors. The third stanza brings us to the great halls, where the communal fire is blazing and the bards are recounting tales of the battles that have been fought. The wounds of the warriors are tended to, and there is a sense of healing and camaraderie.

The refrain is a call to action, signifying the next great adventure on the horizon. The wind fills the sails of the ship, propelling it through the stormy seas with strength and honor. The lyrics overall create an image of a people who are proud of their heritage and willing to go to great lengths to defend it. They embrace their culture and are committed to preserving it for future generations.
