Could've Been
Tiffany Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The flowers you gave me
Are just about to die
When I think about
What could've been
It makes me want to cry

The sweet words you whispered
Didn't mean a thing
I guess our song is over
As we begin to sing

Could've been so beautiful
Could've been so right
Could've been my lover
Every day of my life
Could've been so beautiful
Could've been so right
I'll never hold what could've been
On a cold and lonely night

The memory's of our lovin'
Still linger in the air
Like the faded scent of your roses
They stay with me everywhere

Every time I get my hopes up
They always seem to fall
Still what could've been is better than
What could never be at all

Could've been so beautiful
Could've been so right
Could've been my lover
Every day of my life
Could've been so beautiful
Could've been so right

You could love what could've been
On a cold and lonely night?

Overall Meaning

In Tiffany's song "Could've Been," she sings about a past love that did not work out. The flowers that her former lover gave her are dying, symbolizing the end of the relationship. The memory of their love still lingers in the air, but Tiffany realizes that she will never know what could've been, and that makes her want to cry. The sweet words that were once whispered to her now mean nothing, and she feels that their song is over.

The chorus of the song repeats the phrase "Could've been so beautiful, could've been so right" which highlights the missed opportunity of the relationship. Tiffany laments that the relationship could've been her lover every day of her life, but sadly, that is not the case. She acknowledges that thinking about what could have been is better than what could never be, but it still leaves her feeling lonely on a cold night.

The lyrics to "Could've Been" express the sadness and regret that come with a failed relationship. Despite the memories of their love still being present, Tiffany is left wondering what could have been and feeling the pain of loss.

I'm 42 and I still play 80s music!! Everything about the 80s was cool, the movies, the music, clothes and the sitcoms. So much better than the crap they have today. We were the coolest generation and there will never be another one like us!!!!
