Born in Gloucester, May lived in Frampton-on-Severn when she was young, and attended Stroud High School. She read French at University College, Cardiff, and took vocal studies with Eilleen Price in the music department, almost immediately teaming up with other musicians to form small bands. She joined the Welsh Jazz Society run by Jed Williams, and began listening to a wide range of jazz at local clubs. In the year abroad that was part of her degree she studied in Paris and began her apprenticeship in jazz when she happened to met up with some aspiring young music students, who invited her to have a jam with them. These musicians were Pascal Gaubert and Patrick Villanueva, who recorded with May on her Live in Paris album nearly twenty years later.
She started her career as a trained actress, and a founder member of the Back Door Theatre Company. She later turned to a singing career, performing in a number of musical styles, from baroque to jazz, the latter being her main style. She has performed and recorded with Thad Kelly (bass), Dylan Fowler (guitar), Clark Tracey (drums, and her ex-husband), Tony Coe (saxophones), and Brian Dee and Nikki Iles (piano).

You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To
Tina May Lyrics

Could that pain in your heart be there because you love a new love
Well I know just how you feel
I felt that way for so many years
Ever since that cloudy day you told me goodbye
And with her you walked away
Now baby you′re welcome
Now baby you're welcome back
Did she put you down cause the new love she found looks better
Did you find that a few nights of fun were all she was after
Well I know just how you feel
I felt that way for so many years
Ever since that cloudy day you told me goodbye
And with her you walked away
Now baby you're welcome
Now baby you're welcome back
Now baby you′re welcome back to me
Baby you′re welcome
Now baby you're welcome back
Now baby you′re welcome back to me
In Tina May's song, "You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To," the songwriters touch on a theme that many people can relate to - heartache and heartbreak. The lyrics express a sense of empathy for the person being addressed in the song. The first verse mentions tears that may be falling in the form of drops of water under the chin. This is a metaphor for the tears that may be shed when someone is experiencing heartbreak. The following line mentions that the pain in the heart might stem from the presence of a new love. The use of "new love" suggests that the person being addressed in the song was left for someone else.
The second verse also touches on the theme of heartbreak, but this time from the perspective of the person being addressed in the song. They may have been left for someone who was perceived as "better looking." The following line mentions that the person was only interested in a few nights of fun. This implies that the relationship was not lasting and the interest was superficial.
Overall, the song expresses a sense of compassion and understanding for the person being addressed. The use of the phrase "welcome back" suggests that the person being addressed is being forgiven and welcomed back into the fold, despite their past actions.
