Between 2007 and 2011, Tinashe was a member of the girl group the Stunners. Following their disbandment, she released the positively-reviewed self-recorded mixtapes In Case We Die (2012) and Reverie (2012). Following their success, Tinashe signed with RCA Records and released her third mixtape, Black Water (2013). Her debut single, "2 On" (featuring Schoolboy Q; produced by Mustard), reached number one on the Rhythmic airplay chart, and peaked at number 24 on the Billboard Hot 100.[4] Her debut studio album, Aquarius (2014), was noted by music critics as one of the most "solid" debuts by a new female artist in years. The album garnered her nominations for Soul Train and BET Awards.[5] Her collaboration with Snakehips and Chance the Rapper, "All My Friends", won the Ivor Novello Award for Best Contemporary Song in 2016.[6] The same year, Tinashe appeared on Britney Spears' single "Slumber Party", which topped Billboard's Dance Club Songs chart. Tinashe's second studio album, Nightride (2016), reached number eight on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart in the US. Joyride (2018), her third studio album, peaked at number 58 on the Billboard 200 chart and reached number six on the UK R&B Albums chart. After departing RCA, Tinashe independently released the albums Songs for You (2019), 333 (2021) and BB/Ang3l (2023).
Middle Of Nowhere

In the desert sand where we would lay
In the desert sun I burned my face
You deserted me but you left the pain
When the sky turns into red
I'll be out here on my own
Don't forget I once called your heart my home
If the wind should ever change
But neither will I
In the desert where I saw your smile
In the desert sand where we would play
In the desert heat my tears will dry
You deserted me when you walked away
Middle of nowhere
(I'm livin' in the)
Middle of nowhere yeah
(Stuck here livin' in the)
Middle of nowhere
Won't you come find me there ooh
In the desert where I lost my way
Where the wind blew sand and hid the road
Though the desert days are hard to bare
Still the desert nights are always cold
Middle of nowhere
(I'm livin' in the)
Middle of nowhere yeah
(Stuck here livin' in the)
Middle of nowhere
Won't you come find me there
Mmm
The lyrics of "Middle of Nowhere" by Tinashe depict feelings of abandonment, loss, and longing. The setting of the desert serves as a metaphorical representation of isolation and emptiness. The line "In the desert when I heard your name" suggests that the singer's memory of the person in question is associated with desolation and emptiness.
The desert sand where they used to lay and play signifies the memories shared with this person. However, despite the warm climate, the singer burnt their face in the desert sun, emphasizing the pain they received when this person left them. Though this individual deserted them, they also left behind emotional wounds.
The chorus reflects the singer's struggle to move on. The sky turning red symbolizes emotional intensity and upheaval. Despite being alone and navigating through difficult emotions, the singer asks their former love interest not to forget that they once considered their heart to be their home. The line "If the wind should ever change, who's to say that you will still be the same, but neither will I" indicates the uncertainty of their futures and how both parties have evolved and changed since the separation.
In the second verse, the desert becomes a place of lost memories and confusion. The singer mentions seeing the other person's smile in the desert, reminiscing about the enjoyment they once shared. However, they also highlight that tears will dry in the desert heat, signifying the harsh reality of their current situation. The other person walked away, further deepening the singer's sense of loneliness and abandonment.
The repetition of the phrase "middle of nowhere" in the chorus emphasizes the singer's feeling of being stuck and isolated. They long for the other person to come and find them in their desolate state, hoping for reconciliation or closure. The mention of the desert nights being cold suggests the emotional emptiness and longing that still lingers within the singer.
Overall, "Middle of Nowhere" by Tinashe captures the emotional aftermath of a breakup, using the desert as a symbol for isolation and lost love. The lyrics express the singer's pain, longing, and desire for resolution while also highlighting their ability to evolve and adapt to their new reality.
