Raised in Burlington, Vermont, Thibaud moved to Boston in 1987 to master his craft and pursue his dream. "When I first got there, the music scene was mostly alternative rock and more hardcore stuff. I would get mislabeled as a 'Country Act', but by the 1990's it diversified and there was room for more rootsy Americana stuff."
Todd's songs are a slice of what life is really like...the pains and pleasures, love lost and life reborn. Thibaud recorded two critically lauded albums for Doolittle Records, 1998's Favorite Waste of Time (produced by Bostonian musician Kevin Salem) and 1999's Little Mystery. Using songwriters like Elvis Costello, Neil Finn, and John Hiatt for inspiration, Thibaud built a sound that is entirely his own.
Dragging Me Down

one thing i know / it took nothing to get you going and maybe i'm just running late
/ i hit another twist of fate and the perfect life that we never found
it keeps dragging me down
it keeps dragging me down
giving in, is any way to start again and the simple truth never made a sound
it keeps dragging me down
it keeps dragging me down
it keeps dragging me down
it keeps dragging me down
and the token little chance that you thought you gave to me / was nothing but a joke and the joke is on me one
thing that's true / i had it all 'till i found you / and there's no making sense there's no dealing
with the present tense / and the simple life that we never found
it keeps dragging me down
it keeps dragging me down
it keeps dragging me down
it keeps dragging me down
The lyrics of Todd Thibaud's "Dragging Me Down" depict a sense of resignation and bitterness towards a past love and the life that came with it. The singer laments the fact that their former partner seemed to have been able to easily move on from their relationship while they themselves still feel stuck in their old ways. This is illustrated in the opening lines: "one thing i know / it took nothing to get you going and maybe i'm just running late". The use of the term "twist of fate" suggests that the end of the relationship was not entirely within the singer's control and that they were caught off guard.
The chorus, "it keeps dragging me down," is repeated throughout the song, emphasizing the feelings of being weighed down and burdened by memories and regrets. The singer questions whether it's worth giving in to the pain and starting over, wondering if it's even possible to move on from the past. The line "this heart's too old for a world that runs this cold" suggests a weariness with the harsh realities of life and a longing for something warmer and more comforting.
The song ends with a sense that closure or understanding might never be reached, with the singer acknowledging that they may never be able to make sense of what happened and find peace. The line "there's no dealing with the present tense" indicates a sense of being stuck in the past and an inability to move forward.
