Free Fallin'
Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She's a good girl, loves her mam a
Loves Jesus and America too
She's a good girl, crazy 'bout Elvis
Loves horses and her boyfriend too

It's a long day living in Reseda
There's a freeway runnin' through the yard
And I'm a bad boy cause I don't even miss her
I'm a bad boy for breakin' her heart

And I'm free, free fallin'
Yeah I'm free, free fallin'

All the vampires walkin' through the valley
Move west down Ventura Boulevard
And all the bad boys are standing in the shadows
A ll the good girls are home with broken hearts

And I'm free, free fallin'
Yeah I'm free, free fallin'
Free fallin', now I'm free fallin', now I'm
Free fallin', now I'm free fallin', now I'm

I want to glide down over Mulholland
I want to write her name in the sky
Gonna free fall out into nothin'
Gonna leave this world for a while

And I'm free, free fallin'
Yeah I'm free, free fallin'

Overall Meaning

Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers' song "Free Fallin'" tells the story of a good girl who loves her mother, Jesus, and America. She's also a fan of Elvis and horses, and has a boyfriend. The singer, on the other hand, is a "bad boy" who doesn't miss her and has broken her heart. He lives in Reseda, a place where there's a freeway running through his yard, making it a long day to live. He feels free not to be attached to the good girl but free fallin'.

The song goes on to describe the vampires walking through the valley and the bad boys standing in the shadows, while the good girls are left at home with broken hearts. The singer then expresses his desire to glide down over Mulholland and write her name in the sky, before free-falling out into nothingness and leaving the world for a while.

The lyrics of "Free Fallin'" have been interpreted in various ways. Some people say the song is about the freedom and carefree spirit of living in Los Angeles or California. Others say it's a song about heartbreak and moving on. Despite the different interpretations, the song has remained a classic and has been covered by many artists.

Just missing Tom today. And every day.

This has to be one of the best albums in Rock history. It's perfect.

I moved across the country only to have my apartment fall through on arrival. Me and my dog had to shack up with a stranger for 6 months.

When I got my place I cranked my Stereo (no neighbors) and danced to Apartment Song with my dog. That was a long time ago, but Tom was there.

Full Moon Fever is my favorite Petty album. Probably because it was my first Tom Petty cassette and I played that fucker till it disintegrated and bought another.

Wildflowers is my next favorite, even before the re-release launched it all the way to whatever gig Tom's playing now.

Tom, I love you more than my clumsy words can say. I miss you so damn bad.

This was my little brother’s favorite song. He died in 1994, at 7 yrs old. I visit this song to remember him, and use it as the music to my mental montage of his life
