Blue Moon
Tommy Dorsey Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Blue moon you saw me standing alone
Without a dream in my heart
Without a love of my own
Blue moon, you knew just what I was there for
You heard me saying a prayer for
Someone I really could care for
And then there suddenly appeared before me
The only one my arms will ever hold
I heard somebody whisper "Please adore me"
And when I looked, the moon had turned to gold!
Blue moon!
Now I'm no longer alone

Without a dream in my heart
Without a love of my own

Overall Meaning

The song "Blue Moon" by Tommy Dorsey is a poetic and emotional tune that reflects the raw emotions of someone who is standing alone, without any notions of intimacy and love. The first lines of the song "Blue moon you saw me standing alone, without a dream in my heart, without a love of my own" demonstrate how the singer is not only standing alone but also feeling unfulfilled and unloved. However, the blue moon is described as an entity that understands the singer’s intention "you knew just what I was there for, you heard me saying a prayer for someone I really could care for".

The second stanza talks about how the only person the singer could hold close appeared before them when they were feeling the most desperate. The lines "the only one my arms will ever hold, I heard somebody whisper ‘please adore me’, and when I looked, the moon had turned to gold" highlight how the singer has been blessed with the one they adore the most. Finally, the song ends on a contented note "now I’m no longer alone, without a dream in my heart, without a love of my own", which conveys a message of hope that no one is alone forever, and true love eventually finds its way to those who seek it.

Swinging arrangement with Sinatra and backup. Great music.

I love the effect the acoustic recording gives the music. Yes, it's lower quality than the post-WWII electric recording, but it has a magic all it's own.

Hedge Earthridge,
You may be confusing electric recording, which had been industry standard since 1925, with stereo, and the later studio sound which had a degree of reverb to it.
It's all a matter of preference, I love these old mono recordings with their honesty and immediacy. It has a way of making you feel like you're right there, in amongst the band.

Don't get me wrong. I like the rendition of this song by The Marcels, but with ol' blue eyes and the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, this is a masterpiece!
