As someone who's been on the receiving end of headbutts in two streetfights, i can attest to their effectiveness. Also - to the CTE commentators: CTE is NOT correlated with concussions, but SUB concussive blows. By adding headbutts you can end fights faster, and increase the proportion that end by cut, broken nose, or any facial bones. Sounds bad, but it's actually better for your brain. The worst thing for CTE is strapping boxing gloves on and pelting eachother in the head for 12 rounds...

Simon Tide I wouldn't say soccer is MORE dangerous than boxing. Yes, you're heading the ball, and yes, people do develop CTE from soccer, but I don't think you're going to see an equivalent level of damage to a boxer, given equal training time. If you show me some studies to the contrary though, I'll change my mind. Football though, that's probably the worst offender (along with cheerleading)

Fun Fact: Headbutts were actually legal in boxing back in the times of classical pugilism aka old bareknuckle boxing. It was the advent of rules that eradicated it.

All kinds of weird shit was allowed in classical pugilism, and the further back you go, the least it will resemble actual boxing and seem more akin to MMA. The father of pugilism, James Figg not only fought with little constrains in terms of rules (punches, elbows, headbutts, kicks, grappling), but he was also trained in one handed sword/singlestick, cudgel and quarterstaff.

Also, eventual rulesets (can't remember if it was Broughton's or London prizefighting rules) banned the use of spiked shoes........... yeah, they actually specified that using spiked shoes to hurt your opponent was "kind" of overkill and not allowed, that already tells you how liberal they were at the beggining in terms of allowing all sorts of techniques

Using the head was allowed in Muay Thai up until the 1920s when the King wanted to modernise the sport for appealing to the rest of the world, taking in lots of rules and influence from Western Boxing (like gloves)

@Aljoša P. Lampe I see the point but I do think it’s a bit different. I think they are very similar martial arts because I believe Muay Thai integrated the head butt training and stuff like that before it was banned, but the fact that it isn’t allowed now means it’s probably a separate martial art or more of a variation, like the original said with Karate. I don’t think Judo and BJJ is an apt comparison because of the lack of groundwork in Judo.

Lethwei is insane, fights don't end with KOs, if you get knocked out and wake up a few seconds later but can still go on, they keep going. You should checkout Dave Leduc, he's one of the top fighters in the sport now.

I've used head butts in street fighting and hand to hand combat for decades. Head butts can be used very effectively, but not by everyone.
They especially work very well in a street fight because no one expects them. I learned this when I was young from my grandfather and great uncles who were bare knuckle boxers way back in the day.

Back in 2007, I nearly went to prison while engaging three college kids that kept tipping over my streetside garbage can for fun for a week straight. I waited for them on the 5th or 6th night on my front porch, started pushing one back while his pals grabbed my arms, at which they thought I was helpless and started kicking me in the chest and punching me in the face. I headbutted the first young man and immediately put him in snoretown, and his friends let go of me immediately out of shock. I'm 150lb and have never knocked anyone out previous over a mixed bag of street fights. I probably would have gone to trial for aggravated assault if the police in charge of the case wasn't sick to death of nuisance crimes caused by the local college kids and pressured them to drop charges against me. When I was at the station all night with a sizable scalp cut off the headbutt, the cops brought me a free cheesesteak and actually gave me a real blanket and pillow because they all wished they could KO one of those entitled college clowns. I just got lucky, but a full-force headbutt is no joke. I was defending my rental property from "human vermin", which apparently is a grey area in New England, and not a good war to fight with rich kids that can afford real lawyers. I got very very lucky.

The headbutt is hardly ever expected. Even in street fights. My nephew always caught the guys he fought by surprise with a headbutt. It would turn things around quickly.

It's so obvious when you think about it. Take the hardest part of your body -- the natural arch at the top-front of your head, and slam it into one of the most vulnerable parts of your opponent's body -- their face.

It's really that simple. There's a reason it's illegal in so many fighting sports; it's brutally effective.

My dad's from the middle east and he always trained headbutts. Could shatter a 2 inch thick board on all four sides of his head, front, back, left and right. There's very little defense against it and it's a knockout blow. He said that when he was a baby his mom used to wrap his skull in bandages to supposedly help the bones in the skull fuse tighter. No one in the west is likely to ever use this technique, but if you meet a street fighter that can do it it's pretty much game over.

Fascinating... I'd be really interested to follow up on how much danger there is for the fighter. How dangerous is it in terms of concussions, or possibly even neck injuries? How much power does it generate relative to punches and how much damage does it cause, relatively speaking?

Very dangerous for the victim. Some idiots think that you're supposed to strike the opponents head which is just as likely to knock you out. The face is the target, cheekbones and nose specifically.

It saddens me to see the state of Muay Thai stagnate into basically point-scoring that is influenced by gamblers. This video reminded me of the Golden Age of Muay Thai where fights were exciting and the best of the best competed. Wish the talent pool of Lethwei was as diverse as Muay Thai, maybe the sport will do wonders for Myanmar similar to what happened to Thailand. Thanks for making such a great video mate.

Nice. In the Muay-Thai Plam, the attackers elbows are to the floor, triangle framing the back of neck and both clavicles, dragging down.
The only way out is down to Mr Knee. Side escape attempts are met with knees to body or elbows to head.

How do you think the Jack Johnson clinch, where he would hold both of his opponent's biceps, would work in Lethwei? On one hand it leaves the head exposed, but on the other hand if a fighther pouts their own head down so as to only exposed the top of the head, it would force the opponent to get under them in inorder to effectively strike since for a head butt to be effective it needs to be a harder part of the head against a softer part. It could also open up knees, but I'm curious if there are any examples of it working or not working in Lethwei.

Burmese Lethwai was banned in old days because it is brutal. If u don't want to use head in fighting, u can learn Mway Thai. Mway Thai is a type of Burmese Lethwai because King Narason, who created Mway Thai, was taught Burmese Lethwai when he was taken as a hostage by King Bayint Naung. Now, Burmese Lethwei rises again. That makes more sense. Ive never even regarded my own head as a weapon. I considered it a tool to use in grappling to frame my opponent in uncomfortable or stiff postions but to actually use it as a weapon is baffling.

I was wondering that most places ban headbutts due to concussions but if you use your forehead to land on there more mobile joints or cartilage. Could work against them rather than a standard forehead to forehead collision. Thank you for increasing my arsenal and an effectice way to counter superior clinchers.

The NR1 basic ability a fighter has to have is BIOMECHANICAL INTELLIGENCE. Meaning a good dancer(See Lomachenko),etc. Combine that with rigorous training and you have an outstanding fighter no matter what sport it is.

It used to be legal in thai boxing too. It wasn't that long ago. Into the 80s, I think. But it could be different rules in different matches or regions. I am not completely sure. I know I have seen matches were it was legally used.

This is why trapping skills are so important. You control their whole body with just 2 hands. If you know real internal martial arts you only need 1 hand to control their posture and balance. Aikijujitsu is also good at this, because samurai hands were usually occupied with a weapon.

hello have you looked at glimma? it is a Nordic style of wrestling where the rules set requires you to takedown your opponent then disengage to standing to get the win. i think it will hold techniques useful for a sprawl and brawl type of fighter.

Head comes natural especially for one who rush up to attack where the head will go point to the object of attack while one is punching. Even when will grapple the head will naturally come to contact with the opponent.

Makkushimu just accept you will get hit when you fight. You could end a fight with one head butt ending the fight with having less hard shots hitting you. Meaning you get less damage.

I've heard people talk about this, and most of those techniques are easy for a trained fighter to block or evade. Groin strikes... at least from standing, not gonna connect a lot - it's pretty similar to kicks to the knee (which contrary to a lot of peoples' expectations are actually legal in cage fighting) - totally devastating, but you have to be stupidly accurate, so nobody bothers with them. Point pressure techniques could be effective in the right hands but they're way too much of a gamble since for any given pressure point, one person's gonna have it and the next person's gonna not have it. So that's what makes them not worth doing (aside from the deep ones such as the one triggered by a jaw punch). Headbutts were one of the things mentioned that were an exception to that though. Pretty effective tool all around.

Of course another interesting thing might be the removal of rounds altogether. Just have both fighters go to exhaustion. I mean, if you're gonna be brutal anyway. Would be an advantage for grappling, since there'd be no timer bell to stand you up. Instead of surviving until the end of the round, you'd have to survive until the end of the fight.

And there are always yet more rules to remove even after all that. How about no weight classes? And you're simply expected to be the ideal fighting weight and just let everyone go at it in order to find out what that is. How about no ring gear? Nothing to grab onto but your opponent's body and if they don't stop you from doing that, well then they can't blame anyone but their shoddy defense right? And what about no ring limits? Simply find a flat plane with enough distance all around it so that there's no effective escape. No walls in the way, no argument about the shape - just pure endless ground. Such places do exist.

Just depends how barbaric you wanna make it rly. As well as how filmable and popular, of course.

Probably a stupid question: how do you properly headbutt someone?

When I did wrestling in high school I had an opponent continually try to headbutt me every time we'd clinch. I'd get the taste of blood in my mouth from the impact. I tried to do it back once or twice, but it only made me feel dizzy and had more of that taste in my mouth. Knowing about the dangers of TBIs, I wouldn't want to try headbutting without first knowing how not to hurt myself in the process.

If a fighter gets knocked out before the fifth (and final) round, their corner has a chance to "revive" them, essentially by waking them up and allowing them two minutes to recover so they can jump back into the fight. Each fighter is allowed only one "revival."

If it were as easy to land a knee to the head as it were a headbutt, I'd have agreed about the technique being banned because of cuts. but it's pretty easy to see just how much more shorter a fighters career would be if they were to be sending and receiving headbutts at full impact. the power comes from the same place as knee strikes, legs and core. and the crown of the head is even more hard and pointed than the knee.

Andre Ward was the most dirty fighter of all time, he even threw elbow strikes in with the headbutts but he was a master of hiding it with boxing.

I got my 190lbs ass kicked by a guy who was like 5'7 165lbs max by headbutt × slam takedown back in the 90s . I looked like a wuss in front of everyone. I don't recommend getting headbutted. Underutilized in Vale Tudo and early MMA but very effective in my humble opinion .

Honestly MMA limits so many different styles of fighting that I question the validity of its claim to be the closest thing to real fighting. I’d definitely like to see them introduce head butts.

You don't have to take "MMA's" word for it. Just look at any Street Fight Compilation and make your own comparisons. All the fundamentals of MMA (stand-up striking and grappling, combined with ground fighting) can be seen frequently in a street fight.

But from what I've noticed after watching so many street fight videos is that the most effective tactic (with the highest probability of success) that's outlawed in MMA is the pulling of hair and clothes, which allows street fighters to manipulate where the opponent goes in the fight.

Other street fighting techniques, that are arguably more devastating, but happen less frequently, would be: groin strikes and head stomps/soccer kicks to a downed opponent (the latter of which are still legal in Rizin, BTW).

Wrong, HEMA and other martial arts use weapons. There are other combat sports that allow groin strikes, headbutts, etc. Vale Tudo allows more strikes than MMA.

MMA is just the most popular.

I'm Scottish and can say be proud of your headbutt it's my nations go to for a opening move in a fight. And it's nearly always an effective way to drop someone like a sack of shit hahaha.

Is there a combat sport where you can literally do anything including low blows, eye gouge and bite? Lethwei is the most brutal I’ve clme across but biting eye gouging and low blows are still illegal blows. Is there any others that go even further and include those things in the rules?

No one would compete.
The risk of having your eyeball gouged out isnt worth any purse.
Eye gouges, ball strikes and biting have no place in competition, it's just not worth it.
No one wants their eyes gouged out obviously, same way no one wants to risk permanent ball damage, as for biting,
biting causes nasty infections, I had a horrible infection in my hand from a knuckle that was cut from a guys shattered tooth that took 6 weeks to heal.
Outside of those three things, I think anything should go, knees elbows, headbutts, even rabbit punches but eye gouging, nut shots and biting, no way.

The head but is the most devastating body strike there is. A 120 pound woman can hurt a 250 pound man with a well placed head butt.

The use of small gloves is probably much worse to the brain than headbutts,
With small, padded gloves fighters are able to punch MUCH harder without worrying so much about breaking their hands....
Even though they were primarily invented to avoid cuts, they change the dynamics of the striking tremendously. Bas Ruten says that in a street fight you should always consider striking with open hands, unless you are pretty damn sure you will hit your opponent`s chin

The hands are nothing compared to the force generated from a headbutt because there's only 1 bone to disperse the energy compared to 26, solid bone strikes can reconfigure your cranium for life where punches will just redecorate your face.
