Bennett began singing at an early age. He fought in the final stages of World War II as a U.S. Army infantryman in the European Theater. Afterward, he developed his singing technique, signed with Columbia Records and had his first number-one popular song with "Because of You" in 1951. Several tracks such as "Rags to Riches" followed in early 1953. He then refined his approach to encompass jazz singing. He reached an artistic peak in the late 1950s with albums such as The Beat of My Heart and Basie Swings, Bennett Sings. In 1962, Bennett recorded his signature song, "I Left My Heart in San Francisco". His career and personal life experienced an extended downturn during the height of the rock music era. Bennett staged a comeback in the late 1980s and 1990s, putting out gold record albums again and expanding his reach to the MTV generation while keeping his musical style intact.
Bennett continued to create popular and critically praised work into the 21st century. He attracted acclaim for his collaborations with Lady Gaga, which began with the album Cheek to Cheek (2014); the two performers toured together to promote the album throughout 2014 and 2015. With the release of the duo's second album, Love for Sale (2021), Bennett broke the individual record for the longest span of top-10 albums on the Billboard 200 chart for any living artist; his first top-10 record was I Left My Heart in San Francisco in 1962. Bennett also broke the Guinness World Record for the oldest person to release an album of new material, at the age of 95 years and 60 days.
Bennett has amassed numerous accolades throughout his career, including 19 Grammy Awards and two Primetime Emmy Awards. He was named an NEA Jazz Master and a Kennedy Center Honoree. Bennett has sold over 50 million records worldwide.
In February 2021, it was revealed that Bennett was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2016. Due to the slow progression of his illness, he continued to record, tour, and perform until his retirement from concert performances in August 2021 due to physical challenges.
Bennett died in New York City on Friday, July 21, 2023, at the age of 96. His death was announced by his publicist.
Love For Sale
Tony Bennett Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Is the heavy tread of the heavy feet
That belong to a lonesome cop, she opens shop
When the moon so long has been gazing down
On the wayward ways of this wayward town
That her smile becomes a smirk, she goes to work
Love for sale
Love that's fresh and still unspoiled
Love that's only slightly soiled, love for sale
Who will buy?
Who would like to sample her supply?
Who's prepared to pay the price
For a trip to paradise?
Love for sale
Let the poets pipe of love in their childish way
I know every type of love better far than they
If you want the thrill of love
She's been through the mill of love
Old love, new love
Every love but true love for sale
Appetizing young love for sale
If you want to buy her wares
Follow me and climb the stairs
Love for sale
Take it
Let the poets pipe of love in their childish way
I know every type of love better far than they
If you want the thrill of love
She's been through the mill of love
Old love, new love
Every love but true love for sale
Appetizing young love for sale (love for sale, really)
If you want to buy her wares
Follow me and climb the stairs
Love for sale
The song "Love for Sale" by Tony Bennett is a jazzy tune that tells the tale of a prostitute offering her services to potential customers. The first verse sets the scene of an empty street being patrolled by a lonesome cop, while the prostitute opens her shop, ready to offer her love for sale. The second verse refers to the prostitute's experience in the many types of love, both old and new, that she has encountered through her work. The chorus, "Love for Sale," is repeated throughout the song, emphasizing the transactional nature of the exchange.
The song's lyrics are a commentary on the objectification and commodification of love and sex. The prostitute is portrayed as a businesswoman, offering her services to those who can afford them. The lyrics also suggest a certain level of desperation, both on the part of the prostitute and the potential customers who are willing to pay for her love. The overall mood of the song is somber, with a hint of cynicism, as the reality of the situation is juxtaposed with the upbeat melody.

His career has ended?
@leandromedina6780
@Thomas Martin technically yes, he retired. He has Alzheimer's and wants to spend his last years in calm and enjoy life as much as he can.

I'm not too big of a fan of Gaga, but this woman is probably the most versatile artist I've ever heard of in my whole life (Pop, Country-pop, Electronic, Rock, Jazz, Musical Theatre, Opera; I believe she's covered RnB as well. What more does she have left to achieve?)
@juniorjohnson9509
Maybe not rely on stupid gimmicks like her pork chop dress to gain attention - she needs to let her talent shine as her sales pitch.
@trufflesrheaven
@Junior Johnson The meat dress? That's history. She was real young when she did that...
