Paint Me A Birmingham
Tracy Lawrence Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

He was sittin' there, his brush in hand
Painting waves as they danced upon the sand
With every stroke, he brought to life
The deep blue of the ocean against the morning sky

I ask him if he only painted ocean scenes
He said, "For twenty dollars, I'll paint you anything"
Could you paint me a Birmingham?
Make it look just the way I planned
A little house on the edge of town
Porch goin' all the way around
Put her there in the front yard swing
Cotton dress, make it early spring
For a while, she'll be mine again
If you could paint me a Birmingham

He looked at me with knowing eyes
And took a canvas from a bag there by his side
Picked up a brush and said to me
"Son, just where in this picture would you like to be?"

I said, "If there's any way you can
Could you paint me back into her arms again?"

Would you paint me a Birmingham?
Make it look just the way I planned
A little house on the edge of town
Porch goin' all the way around
Put her there in the front yard swing
Cotton dress, make it early spring
For a while, she'll be mine again
If you could paint me a Birmingham

Paint me a Birmingham
Make it look just the way I planned
A little house on the edge of town
Porch goin' all the way around
Put her there in the front yard swing
Cotton dress, make it early spring
For a while, she'll be mine again
If you could paint me a Birmingham

Oh, paint me a Birmingham

Overall Meaning

"Paint Me a Birmingham" is a song by American country music artist Tracy Lawrence, released in 2003. The song is about a man who asks a painter if he can paint him a picture of Birmingham, a place where he once lived and loved a woman. The painter agrees and the man describes exactly what he wants the painting to look like. He wants the house he lived in to be on the edge of town, a porch going all the way around, and the woman he loved sitting on the front yard swing wearing a cotton dress. He wants the painting to depict an early spring day when everything is bright and new.

The song tells a story of love, loss, and longing. The man is clearly still in love with the woman and wishes he could be with her again. The painting is a way for him to hold onto a memory of her and of the life they once shared. The song is poignant and evocative, with vivid imagery that paints a picture of a simpler time and a simpler love. The man's request for the painting is a way for him to connect with his past and to remember a time when life seemed more innocent and full of possibilities.

"Son, just where in this picture would you like to be?" One of the most powerful lines in a song I've EVER heard! It gives me chills!

my dad ripped this onto an old music player when i was a kid and gave it to me with a couple other of his favorite songs, even at 10 i knew how deep the lyrics were and they just grow on me more and more as time goes on

Could I paint you front out of my hold again?

Forever she'll be my friend...if you could paint murray bingham.... #Rearranged #ItsTrueTho #SeeRobinHoodNow? Lulz. It was one of my exes. I lived next door to Bingham on Claude Parks Rd in Murrayville, GA in 2004. #ScrappyDoo

His brush in hand like a bottle of Buchanan's 12 year.

I met my husband on Sardis down the road from where the roundhouse used to be in Gainesville. It was my husband's brother who lived down the street from Robin Hood and next door to Bingham. He died last year in 2019 but I fulfilled a promise to my brother in law from 2005 and had a Georgia Bulldogs flower arrangement made in Raleigh, North Carolina by my cousin who's a florist and had it delivered to his funeral in Gainesville because he's the reason I loved football. If it hadn't been for him I would have never met my husband and there were a lot of happy memories I could never forget and I wanted him to know I didn't forget our talks or forget his friendship.
