I’ve recently started looking after my nails more, these are my tips that I’ve learnt that help:

- Always make sure your nails are clean, use a tool to clean underneath them if you need to and scrub them frequently but with something gentle like a sponge or a cloth.
- If you want to grow them long then don’t file too frequently, otherwise file them every week or every other week (not more frequently than a week though because filing too often can damage your nails as well, square nails with right angles are easier to maintain but they might break easier if they’re long. The best files to use are glass files, they can be expensive though so I got a sapphire file for only £2 and it works perfectly fine. If there are rough edges use a finer file afterwards.
- If they are long and you don’t want them to break, act as if your nails are freshly painted, stop using them as tools for things like opening drawers etc and be more cautious with them.
- Try to avoid acrylic nails or lots of nail polish as this can be harmful, if your going to wear nail polish, wear as few layers as possible, preferably one coat and one top coat and avoid acrylic nails completely, at least for a few months while you’re first trying to improve your nails.
- Try to incorporate foods that will help your nails into your diet, even if it is just having a bit of it every other day that will help you have stronger nails, things like almonds and other nuts are good, foods with lots of vitamin E like avocado, mango and kiwi are good as well. And remember to drink plenty of water because your hydration is really good for your nails.
- Stop picking or biting your nails, even though it might be hard, trust me it will be worth it when you have your ideal nails.
- Keep patient, your nails aren’t going to improve over night, it might be a couple of weeks or even a month before you notice much change, depending on what you want your nails to be like, so you need to keep patient.
- It’s equally as important to look after your cuticles as it is your nails, leave your nails in warm/hot water for around a minute to soften your cuticles before using your fingernail on your other hand or a cuticle pusher (Again I got one for £2 and it works well) to gently push up your cuticles, do not cut them though, they protect against bacteria and infections, do this every week after you file them.
- Every day at least once (I find it easier to do in the evening before I go to sleep) massage your cuticles with oil. You can pretty much use any type, you can get special cuticle oils but I use olive oil because I have it anyway and it works well, just message each cuticle for about 10 seconds and leave the oil on there. This step really helps so I recommend you do it unless you absolutely can’t.
- Remember that the key to healthy nails is your cuticles and healthy cuticles = healthy nails.
- If you want to find as exact routine and exactly what products to use, looks up a few different nail routine videos on YouTube to get more ideas and tips, this is what I do.
- Remember, having healthy nails doesn’t need to be expensive and you don’t need to have fancy products, you can probably get everything you need for under £10, maybe under £5.

I hope these tips help you reach your nail goals! 💖

@13- Leen kamel and Anya. I am a guy, (or man, male person, lots of testosterone etc...) with my male perspective in a female based forum. I have guy nails and never bite (being a computer technician and guitar player, I need my hands in good shape to play instruments, work on small objects with hands that do not hurt, blead easily, you know). I see your point Anya, or issue to use physical reminders, tools, visual art, devices, notes to stop or at least mitigate the damage. very helpful, good, powerful mental programming. Something else here which I have thought out much and revised through my years. Most of our external damage (as far perhaps as self destructive urges) comes from feelings on the inside. I learned a lot in AA, stopped the drink, the drugs. I also met people who are self cutters and many who engage in every kind of self loathing and destruction (conscious or not). Although I am not saying this is probable, but it is possible that Leen may have some issues with family, relives, friends (or others from school) who cause anxiety (show me a person who does not!). I am not a doctor, and am not qualified make a determination. Perhaps this issue is something inside her. Perhaps it is something she can't explain. Perhaps it is such a deep subject she can't tell her priest or family or any counselor. That would be such a rough one. I speak out of respect only. Sincerely (and I hope you work this out)... Danny

Thank you!🌫🤍

@13- Leen kamel when I first stopped biting my nails I used clear nail polish, coloured nail polish, and sometimes gel polish (at the time I was a complete beginner to gels so they would often rip my nail because they would pull up, so I mainly recommend the other 2), it stopped me biting them as it hardens the nails and makes them less flimsy and kind of more awkward to bite. It also helped because it would ruin the nail polish on there and I wouldn't want to eat the manky nail polish chemicals in it anyway. Hope this helps :)
