Can't You Tell It's Me
Tyrone Davis Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hello baby, how've you been doing these past few years
You can't catch my voice
And you say you really don't know who it is

Can't you tell it's me
I used to whisper sweet things in your ear
Can't you tell it's me
We used to make love so tenderly

Remember how we used to talk
And take those long and lovely walks in the park
Or we would sit down on the bench
And make plans for the future in the dark
Can't you tell it's me
Ooh! it's me, it's me, it's me
Can't you tell it yet
Ooh! how soon we do forget

Is that a baby, oh! so you got married?
Well I'll tell you what
Just forget I even called

But I still love you even though
You've forgotten all about me
You've forgotten all about me

Remember how you felt
The day I had to leave and go away
You promised you would wait forever

And every night for me you said you'll pray
Can't you tell it's me
Ooh! the things we used to do
Can't you tell it's me baby
Ooh! it's me, it's me, it's me

But I still love you even though
You've forgotten all about me
You've forgotten all about me
You've forgotten-all-about me

(All about me)
So long baby

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Tyrone Davis's song "Can't You Tell It's Me" tell the story of a man who is reaching out to an old flame he hasn't spoken to in years. He calls her, but he can tell that she doesn't recognize his voice. He reminds her of the things they used to do together, how they used to talk and take long, lovely walks in the park, or sit and make plans for their future. He's trying to get her to remember their past, and to recognize that it's him who is calling. He even asks her if she had a baby or got married, but tells her to forget he ever called if she did. He reminds her of the promises she made, to wait for him forever and to pray for him every night. He's sad that she has forgotten about him, but he still loves her.

The lyrics convey a sense of nostalgia and longing for a past that is no longer present. The man is trying to rekindle what he once had with his old flame, but it seems that she has moved on with her life. The repetition of the phrase "can't you tell it's me" emphasizes the singer's frustration and longing for recognition. The lyrics also point to the power of memory and how it can bring people back to the past, even when the present has moved on.

@Terryman1960

I first heard this song back in 79 when it came out, but I only heard the part, "I still love you even though, you've forgotten all about me." I was leaving to join the Air Force so I didn't buy the record. Through the years I've thought about that stanza. Thank you for posting this because I have finally heard the whole song and purchased it on iTunes.

I often wonder where he was going. Military, College and last Prison. Hope it was one of the first two mentioned.
