The Wanderer
U2- live Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I went out walking
Through streets paved with gold
Lifted some stones
Saw the skin and bones
Of a city without a soul
I went out walking
Under an atomic sky
Where the ground won't turn
And the rain it burns
Like the tears when I said goodbye

Yeah I went with nothing
Nothing but the thought of you
I went wandering

I went drifting
Through the capitals of tin
Where men can't walk
Or freely talk
And sons turn their fathers in
I stopped outside a church house
Where the citizens like to sit
They say they want the kingdom
But they don't want God in it

I went out riding
Down that old eight lane
I passed by a thousand signs
Looking for my own name

I went with nothing
But the thought you'd be there too
Looking for you

I went out there
In search of experience
To taste and to touch
And to feel as much
As a man can
Before he repents

I went out searching
Looking for one good man
A spirit who would not bend or break
Who would sit at his father's right hand
I went out walking
With a bible and a gun
The word of God lay heavy on my heart
I was sure I was the one
Now Jesus, don't you wait up
Jesus, I'll be home soon
Yeah I went out for the papers
Told her I'd be back by noon

Yeah I left with nothing
But the thought you'd be there too
Looking for you

Yeah I left with nothing
Nothing but the thought of you
I went wandering

Oh ho

Overall Meaning

The Wanderer by U2 paints a picture of a world without purpose or meaning, where the pursuit of material wealth has left society empty and soulless. The opening lines depict a city paved with gold, which initially sounds like a dream come true, but upon closer inspection, it is revealed to be a place of decay and despair, where even the rain burns like tears. The wanderer is searching for something in this desolate world, but it is not material wealth. The only thing he has is the thought of a person he longs for.

As he continues to wander, he encounters a world controlled by those in power, where voices are silenced and fathers turn in their own children. He stops outside a church where the citizens proclaim to want a kingdom, yet they do not want God in it. This illustrates society's tendency to cherry-pick values and morals without considering the full consequences.

In the final verses, the wanderer sets out on a mission, carrying a gun and a bible, feeling that he is the chosen one. However, he realizes that he cannot rely on his own strength and makes a plea to Jesus, asking Him not to wait up but promising to return soon. The wanderer understands that he may have left with nothing tangible but the thought of his loved one, and that was more valuable to him than anything else.

I would've liked to see Johnny Cash perform this live with U2. That would have been so cool. But, this version is incredible none the less. I like how many musical avenues U2 moves in & out of. That's why they've been around for so long. Simply, Superb musicianship by the entire band collectively. Timeless.
