Ready to form another band after a five-year hiatus from music, Hailey went to see Grey perform with Mellowdrone. "I had been waiting to meet someone who had her talent and drive," Hailey says. "After hanging out a couple of times, it was obvious we were a great match." For her part, Grey says she was ready to leave behind session work and focus on a creative collaboration. "I've wanted to write and produce my own music, but was too busy touring as a background performer."
The result of their efforts was the EP I See Red, which was recorded over several months in a bedroom at Grey's Los Angeles home. ("Vocals were done in the bathroom," Hailey says, "it was very sexy.") Produced by Grey and mixed by Al Clay (who has worked with the Pixies, Frank Black, and Blur), I See Red, with its laser-sharp melodies, ethereal harmonies, lush string arrangements, and muscular drums, is a great introduction to the duo.
Less than a year after the release of I See Red, Uh Huh Her will unveil their full-length debut, the accessibly melodic Common Reaction, on August 19th. Produced by Al Clay … it was recorded in January at Clay’s L.A. studio, a world away from Grey’s bathroom …. The effort is an extension of the band’s previous musical foundation, as evidenced by focused tracks like "Not a Love Song," "Wait Another Day" and "Explode."
"We wrote a lot of it before we went in the studio, but we wound up re-cutting everything," Grey says of the 11-track album. "We wanted to make a commercially appealing record. The songs aren't specifically poppy but appeal to a wide variety of people."
"Sometimes the song just calls for it and you can't fight the pop," Hailey laughs. "I like that it's eclectic and not just one thing. That bores me in a record. We never wanted this band to be small."
Common Reaction is now available.

Oh love, what did you do to my heart?
Cause it stains
And I would love to let it go
Oh you, you make it look so sweet
It hurts
Oh I can't escape anymore
I have to let it go
Oh I can't do this anymore
Just have to let you go
I wanna break free
Walk under a blue sky
Oh give me what I need
Cause I'll go sooner or later
Oh love, look at my bleeding heart
Cause it stains
And we're not the same
~Never fall out of line
Oh you won't let it lie
Cause there's a war going on in your head
And it's winning so far
Please don't leave me alone
I know we're not the same, we're not the same
Disdain, Disdain
The lyrics of Uh Huh Her's song "Disdain" convey a mix of emotions, including love, pain, and resentment. The song is primarily about a toxic relationship that has left one person feeling hurt and brokenhearted. The opening lines, "Oh love, what did you do to my heart? Cause it stains / And I would love to let it go," suggest that the singer has been deeply hurt by someone they love and is struggling to move on.
The chorus of "Disdain" features repeated lines about letting go and breaking free, suggesting that the singer recognizes the need to distance themselves from the toxic relationship. However, they also express a desire to hold on to what they have, even if it hurts: "Oh you, you make it look so sweet / It hurts / And I am not the same." This ambivalence is a common theme in songs about love and relationships, highlighting how difficult it can be to truly let go of someone.
Later in the song, the lyrics shift to a more pleading tone, as the singer begs their partner not to abandon them: "Please don't leave me alone / I know we're not the same, we're not the same / Disdain, Disdain." This section of the song suggests that despite the hurt and toxicity in the relationship, the singer still feels a strong bond to their partner and fears being left alone.
Overall, the lyrics of "Disdain" are a haunting and emotional exploration of the complex emotions that come with love and heartbreak. The song captures the struggle of trying to let go of a toxic relationship while also acknowledging the powerful pull and pain that comes with staying.

Thank you for uploading and sharing this. I wish UHH were still making music together. Their songs are some of my favourite music. Many women learnt about UHH via "The L Word" and both that series and music for it along with Uh Huh Her's helped support their coming to terms with their identity whether they were in or out of the closet.
