Is racism an issue in Stapleton beyond the history of the name?

@ukuleleloki

The design for this planned community touted the value of diversity as a core principle. It also included a percent goal for low cost and affordable housing. Last I heard, that goal had not been met. The surrounding neighborhoods have historically been African American and Latino majority neighborhoods. S***leton is conspicuously white. Residents who began the group NE Denver Neighbors for Racial Justice have spoken about a general bias in the neighborhood. There have been resident speaking about wanting to gate the community, or keep outside neighbors from accessing the parks, pool, school
and shops. It's a bigger question and I'll hope residents and neighbors who have experienced this directly will add their comments.

What I do know is the name honors a legacy that doesn't meet with contemporary standards. A name change is an action that is measurable and achievable.

@strange_ranger1

I think the name change is a good campaign, as you say. I also think it should be tied to systematic issues in order to really have a meaningful effect. It sounds like there may be wrongdoing afoot and we all know that bigotry is all over America. I think there needs to be some sort of proof here though, beyond the historical controversy over the name. Would you be happy if they just changed the name but carried on being a racially exclusive community?

@ukuleleloki

I'm not sure I follow your request for "proof... beyond the historical." Proof of what? Proof of the existence of racism? Clearly you're aware of the depth and scope of the problem. So keep in mind that my video, and the campaign in general, is about changing the name S**pleton. That's enough to prompt the name change. Period.

As for ongoing systemic racism (in America in general, or in Stapleton specifically) well, that's fodder for a thousands other videos on a thousand other days. I hope you'll make some. I hope others will make some.

For now: The name St**pleton needs to change, and it needs to change for the reasons outlined above. It's a meaningful, measurable, attainable action, and it can be done.

Is that the end goal? No, of course not. The anti-racism movement will continue as long as there is systemic racism. Name changes and removal of symbols of oppression are battles in the ongoing struggle.

I hope that clarifies. And thanks for your thoughtful comments.

@strange_ranger1

are there examples of racism in Stapleton besides the name?

@strange_ranger1

Look, I don't want to come off as a naysayer... you probably already see me as someone trying to 'poke holes' in your story. I am only trying to search for the root of the problem. I really want to to combat bigotry, but I am beginning to learn how complicated and daunting the issue of bigotry really is. That's why I want to see campaigns, revolutions, struggles, etc. that actually have a plan. In this case I am interested to see credible evidence that Stapleton is in fact treating people unfairly based on their race or religion. This gives thrust to the name change campaign and gives power to your voice and your videos and your movement. Right now, based on the info presented in your video, the name change campaign feels weak and like you are complaining about being 'offended' rather than trying to actually enact change. Changing the name of a big business is not as simple as picking a band name is highschool. An area being predominantly white doesn't denote racism. Wanting to 'gate in the community' doesn't necessarily mean that the inhabitants want brown people out. Again, I am basing this assessment on the information in your video. Can you provide or can you point me to more legitimate proof to support your claim?
