My son this diagnosis as well and first of all I would like to say thank you to all psychiatric nurses, psychiatric techs and psychiatrist who treat individuals with brain diseases. I know it can be difficult and very stressful at times and I think you all deserve better pay, more time off to take care of yourselves to reduce turn over. My family appreciates the compassionate ones who try to interact with individuals with brain diseases to comfort and to help them understand their situation which can take a lot of daily reminders. This video made me very upset because until you have a loved one who has one of these undertreated diagnosis you just don’t understand how important it is to get these individuals to a safe place for care and not just 72 hours which is quite worthless for these serious brain conditions! We need better treatments and more research to develop better treatments for individuals inflicted with psychosis!! Thank you sweet nurse for being compassionate for these individuals and to all the other wonderful nurses, techs and doctors trying to do their best to treat these people in the short amount of time allowed by the law for people of age which is a shame and the reason many die from these brain diseases because they did not get the time needed, or lack of evidence based care for psychosis. Six months to a year in a staged system for stabilization , improvement and finding the best medication regimen, and management reintegration programming back to school or jobs is needed for the best functionality outcomes.

I've found that many Police officers are just as bad. The EMT'S were wrong for how they treated him too but, at the end of the day the police officer put the safety of that guy in his hands. He was solely the one who failed him. Shame on him.

Its an outlier. My friend has had 2 psychedelic induced psychotic breakdowns and the cops and EMTs treated him with empathy, took him to the hospital til he sobered up and calmed down, and didnt charge him with anything despite doing many things including assaulting an officer and indecent exposure which couldve been charged. Before some twerp asks, he is half black half hispanic.

You are generally safe with EMTs even if they are a little impersonal sometimes, which who could blame them given the nature of the work

The EXACT same thing happened to my boyfriend. The police/sheriff dept. dropped him at a Wawa gas station when I BEGGED they to take him to a hospital. They said he “didn’t meet the criteria.” I told them he was suicidal. Two hours later he ran in front of traffic on 41, the Tamiami Trail in Naples, Florida.

Usually Cops use the law (section 135 136)for people like this, so the EMTs can take them. They did not show what the EMTs did entirely if the guy refused hospital transport they can't force him but you can clearly hear the rude EMT say jail or hospital, He refused hospital by nodding no. They EMTs probably got tired of trying to convince him to go to hospital, that's when it got bad; and cop walk in the ambulance to see the EMTs frustrated. But, being naked is illegal he was supposed to be arrested or section; so EMTs can take him by force if not they can't or else its kidnapping for EMTs and could be charged. This is just a short video showing burnt out responders.

@@paulf3 Yes, but ammonia capsules are (not) used to help you breathe better. Which I don't understand why they did that. This irritation causes you to involuntarily inhale, which triggers respiration, allowing oxygen to flow rapidly to your brain. This makes you begin to breathe faster as a result. But, hes not in respiratory distress or unconsciousness. His oxygen levels are perfectly fine. It's short acting to wake you up with the gas released in it. He can leave it in his nose all day and still be fine.

I had a psychotic episode twice. The first one I was treated by this kind of people. They left me alone too 25 miles away from home. No medication, no hospital, no escorting to my house, nothing. I had to go back walking, no sleeping, dehydrated, with fear of dying. Those people are not ready to handle psychotic episodes.

I had a similar situation happen to me. I was having an episode that I didn't understand at the time, It crept up on me. The police were called because I was wandering in the street aimlessly. Since I hadn't done anything illegal they put me in the car and asked me where I wanted to go, but I had no idea, I was having this episode on the street I lived on at the time with my girlfriend, she thought I was on drugs and called the police but I know I didn't take any, but I thought maybe I was drugged and didn't understand what was happening to me. The police ended up taking me in the police car and getting frustrated with me and dropped me off miles from where they picked me up, because I didn't know where I wanted to go but I recognized where I was and eventually walked to my house where I grew up which was miles away also but still my side of town so I walked there. My guardians thought I was on drugs also since I was talking about things that didn't make sense. They ended up calling my girlfriend and she took me to the hospital, but she couldn't stay with me. I couldn't explain anything to the hospital staff and I was alone. They gave me cat scans and all kinds of things. The hospital bills were outrageous. Labs came back showing a negative tox screen. No drugs. Turns out I was severely dehydrated and hallucinating due to the dehydration. A simple IV fixed the issue but I was hospitalized for 3 days because they couldn't figure out what was wrong with me and for my safety. I was actually surprised when the doctor came back and said it was just dehydration and there was nothing wrong with me. My girlfriend came and apologized to the hospital and apologized to me when she found out I didn't do any drugs. Most people don't know how to deal with these types of episodes. First responders, and hospital staff should definitely be required to deal with mental illness or episodes of psychosis in these situations, they always assume it's drug related. I'm just glad harm didn't come to me when I was having this episode.

It is a microcosm of how mentally illness is treated and perceived in America. My wife of 20 years was diagnosed schizophrenic about 4 years ago. She was once a super mom, totally involved in our kids school and had a ton of friends until little by little she started getting paranoid to the point of about 10 hospital stays. 8 taken by me and 2 via Dallas police. In the last 4 years it’s been eye opening to see which friends really understand and which ones don’t know and don’t care. Ultimately her illness has cost her every friend and most of her family except for me. Believe me, it’s been taxing to say the least. It’s easy for people to spout off and say” divorce her” and I’ve even questioned my decisions many times but I keep ending up at the fact that she has been my best friend since 1994 and I took a vow of “sickness and in health”. Ultimately her health is up to her and this last hospital stay seems to have made her realize what she’s lost and what she has left. She is trying everyday to gain our kids trust back and be a good mother and wife. Is it perfect? No but I’ll take it.

I suffer from bipolar disorder and I’ve had a similar experience but I was arrested and put in jail because they thought I was drinking or high and I was having a manic episode I was put on probation and had a court date this all happened when I was 18 and my adoptive parents at the time didn’t know how to deal with something like that and called the cops on me. But this just goes to show no one really understands what you’re going through unless you go through it yourself it’s a terrible disease I wish I never had to live with but I manage it with medication and trying to eat better and live a healthier lifestyle my heart goes out to this man’s family and friends

Just want to clarify; those people are NOT nurses. They are emergency medical technicians, EMTs or personnel (paramedics). They work on a ambulance and do mobile rescue and delivery to nurses and doctors at hospitals etc. Nurses work within those buildings. I know they seem similar as they both take care of people medically, but they aren’t the same. just wanted to educate and spread some knowledge !

I went to the hospital when I was suicidal in 2017. They kept me in the ER w/ nurses watching me constantly, nothing to do but sit and stare at a wall. They sedated me cause I couldn't sleep. Then they woke me up at 4am, had a "Social Worker" talk to me and tell me they had no beds and I'd be better of going elsewhere. Drugged, tired and confused they discharged me at 4am and security told me to leave or they'd have the cops arrest me.

Never trusted a public institution since then. You all make me disgusted to my core, you leave the mentally ill and disabled to fend for themselves on the Streets. Is that the better America your ancestors dreamed of?

Or is it because the risk of homelessness is the only incentive to keep showing up to increasingly worse jobs with less pay, less benefits, health insurance tied to employment (good luck getting your prescriptions filled, thanks covid). They use homelessness and passively endorce such abuse cause it keeps wage slaves in the wage-cage.

This nation could end homelessness in a week if it wanted to.

They should have taken him to the hospital or even a holding area in jail.
It was obviously he was not able to care for himself.

I'm a Nationally Registered Paramedic. Within this brief video, he met NONE of the required criteria to be able to refuse transport. The EMS crew had ZERO choice but to take him to a hospital. Him stepping out of that ambulance and back onto that highway was not an option. They are FULLY liable and should all have their certs revoked and be in prison.

No, when police officer are present and are claiming the suspect the EMT can't do anything else, they thought he's going to take him to the station or something. They were just being rude bc of being tired, i know that's not an excuse for them but they weren't criminal in this instant.

My husband just got diagnosed with schizophrenia and it’s so scary when it first starts cuz you have no clue what is happening and my husband has done things he would have never done a few years back. People are not educated enough in mental illnesses like they should be to be able to help people that need help. This world is just awful. Poor young man and his poor family!

Not all but most people who use drugs and get in trouble need help and are VICTIMS not people who should be put in prison. This is why he was treated so horribly (how can you sleep with just letting him leave knowing that he will end up dead or in a bad situation), because this is how they treat people who used drugs and where also in a bad situation.

My gf called 911 for an ambulance due to myself having seizure activity due to a rare disease. A police officer arrived on scene first, knowing it was a medical call. Instead of helping he tackled and beat me along with 4 other officers. We had charges filed on us for reasons we still don't know. I've never recovered from that moment 1 1/2 years ago.

How can you be a medical responder and not be able to recognize mental illness. This is absolutely unprofessional, sad, and enraging. I was an EMT and they taught us to recognize mental illness. I am also a soon to be nurse and in my behavioral health course I interacted with so many patients suffering from mental illness. If you are properly trained and have empathy you can recognize those psychiatric cues from miles away.

This same thing happened to me in Missouri, troopers dropped me off on a back country road in 17° winter storm and I was luckily given a ride to a hospital by a farmer 1p4 hours after being dropped off by the trooper.. I don't use drugs or alcohol but they acussed me of being on something. I pray for anyone who is in crisis that they are treated with dignity and respect..
