Speed of Sound
Uriah Heep Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Before it starts, before I begin
How long before you decide?
Before I know what it feels like
Where to, where do I go?
If you've never tried then you'll never know
How long do I have to climb
Look up, I look up at night
Planets are moving at the speed of light
Climb up, up in the trees
Every chance that you get is a chance you seize
How long am I gonna stand
With my head stuck under the sand?
I'll stop before I can stop
Or before I see things the right way up
All that noise and all that sound
All those places I got found
And birds go flying at the speed of sound
To show you how it all began
Birds came flying from the underground
If you could see it then you'd understand
Ideas that you'll never find
Or the inventors could never design
The buildings that you put up
Or Japan and China, all lit up
The sign that I couldn't read
Or a light that I couldn't see
Some things you have to believe
But others are puzzles, puzzling me
All that noise and all that sound
All those places I got found
And birds go flying at the speed of sound
To show you how it all began
Birds came flying from the underground
If you could see it then you'd understand
Oh, when you see it then you'll understand
All those signs I knew what they meant
Some things you can't invent
Some get made and some get sent, ooh
Birds go flying at the speed of sound
To show you how it all began
Birds came flying from the underground
If you could see it then you'd understand
Oh, when you see it then you'll understand
The lyrics of Uriah Heep's "Speed of Sound" are a reflection on the time it takes to fully understand something or someone. The singer is experiencing self-doubt and uncertainty, questioning how long it will be before they can fully dive into something – before they can experience it fully. The opening lines in the first verse reflect the feeling of hesitation and the need for assurance to proceed, mirroring the fact that we all have to start somewhere, and we're not always sure when the perfect time is.
The second verse of the song touches on the fact that opportunities are fleeting and have to be seized when we feel unsure. It's a reminder that sometimes, we have to take risks to grow and experience new things. The planetary imagery in the following lines emphasizes that everything is in motion, and we have to keep moving too. The pre-chorus emphasizes the need to break free from stagnation and get off the ground to experience new things.
The chorus brings the idea of sound and the universe together with the image of birds flying. The final verse emphasizes the power of belief and the intricate puzzles of life that are sometimes impossible to figure out. The repetition of the chorus emphasizes the power of the visual experience and how seeing something can transform it from an abstract notion to an understandable concept.
