My boss at my job she has a big, new truck and one day she was smelling a horrible smell in her truck and it was lasting for several weeks. Kind of surprised the mold took hold in the Zero first. But then it took off in the Coke I guess because it had much more sugar to work with. It would be interesting to do this experiment testing the Ph daily to see how it effected the growth. My theory is that the Zere went flat first and so its acidity dropped to what was tolerable.

The size of the initial mould colony is going to be high variance, as it came from the cup and/or the ice cubes. What section of the freezer the ice cubes were in, or how far to the back of the cupboard the cup came from will make a big difference in how large the initial mould growth is.

different lifeforms growing in it is interesting. regular coke looked to be growing mold while coke zero seemed to be hosting a SCOBY. makes sense since the mold could easily feed off sugar while the SCOBY is adapted for breaking down stuff like the sugar alcohols in artificial sweeteners.

Natural airborne moulds and fermentation. This happens with some beers and breads.Pretty much there are natural moulds in the air anyway. It would have been more interesting to see if one actually became toxic because of the mould. I’d be more interested in that. It was always going to grow mould and feed the mould . One thing I’ve always wondered about these is what would happen if you just let the mold sit indefinitely. Once all of the moisture dries up and all of the sugar is consumed, the mold would theoretically die, right? And then would it just be dust?

yes, without moisture the mold cannot defend itself and will be oxidized into oblivion by the sun and the air.
but the mold changes color before that: spore release - those spores are often resistant to dessication, and can sit dormant for years, until they land in another glass of pop or other suitable substrate. some molds actively disperse them in the air.
the green stuff on the left is clearly mold spores which spread in the air.
some mold can just break off fibers that float around without specialized sexual spores.
some molds form dessication resistant masses called sclerotia too.

zero has no sugar at all in it. Instead it has acesulfame potassium and aspartame, e950 and e951 respectively. That's why it tastes wrong

This was a very interestimg and unexpected video. I expected the timelapse to look the same for both colas, except that the zero would be slower, but instead the timelapse for both (especially at the start) looked very different. Great video.

At the end, this was a really cool demonstration of melting point decreashing when water is made less pure.
The coke zero evaporates faster because there's fewer chemicals in the water (sugar) making the water less pure.
It's the same principal we use when putting salt on roads to prevent ice forming.

around day 50 its cool to see the mold in the coke zero like actually bringing more moisture up toward the rim of the mold where it stuck to the glass, you can watch it keeping it self alive, very cool. also what kind of molds are these? the mold in the original coke seemed healthier at first and more concentrated, prob because it didnt nead to spread because it had plenty of sugar in the liquid, maybe? Did the bluish green mold excel in the orginal because of the carbs and sugars? this is interesting, thank you for the video :)

So, mold requires a few things to grow, water warmth, food. On the original Coke I liked how there were at least 2 identified species that developed. What is also interesting is that once the water level dropped so much, mold could not form anymore because there was too little water, too much sugar concentrated.

On the other hand, I was not surprised that Coke Zero dried out completely, as there is pretty much nothing but coloured flavored water there. What I find intriguing is what the hell did the mold eat from there? Can it break down artificial sweeteners?

I'd expect there to be very little sugar left in the Coke at that point given the fact there is so much growth. On this, it's very surprising to me given the large difference in nutritional content that the biomass appeared similar. You would expect the one with massive amounts of carbon from sugar to grow more, no? I wonder how so much biomass is forming here in the Coke Zero.

I don't know much about mould, is it possible that the differences between. The 2 are partially or largely due to the luck of which mould spores fell into each glass or do their different compositions always attract the same types of mould? I guess you would have to have 2 or 3 glasses of each to demonstrate that it was a consistent repeatable effect.

Yeah. At first I though it might be the caramel that supports growth too, but it might just contain caramel coloring (which is different than real caramel). But some molds can me vicious little bastards and can break down a lot of chemicals for nutrition. It would only be molds growing in it, because the pH is too low to support bacteria.

So is the water being absorbed by the mold colonies, or is it just evaporating? Maybe both? I would guess that once enough water is depleted the colonies would start dying off due to the concentrated sugar/sweetener creating a hypertonic environment. I wonder if by the end of the time lapse if any of the mold colonies developed caffeine resistance (as in, remaining viable despite the presence of it given its anti-fungal properties)

the mold also turns sugar to water and CO2 by respiration.
there is also some vapor pressure which would lead to a dilute condensate running down the sides of the glasses as temperature fluctuates.
mold has chitin cell wall, so it is more resistant to osmotic shock than bacteria.

I did this experiment once back in the early 90s using just Coca Cola Classic. I poured it into a Styrofoam cup; by week 3 it had eaten through the cup and had solidified onto the table. The Coke had gone from liquid to a thick, hard, sticky resin.

It looked to me like the water in the coke evaporated a tiny bit faster in the beginning.
But once the sugar concentration got high enough the Coke Zero clearly had the lead in evaporation.
I never trusted the story of artificial sweeteners are terrible for you. This sorta reinforced that.

I once did temporary work in an office where someone had left a plastic cup of coffee, near a photocopier, for weeks. It was very fuzzy and hadn't evaporated yet. 😁

One could assume that the mold is coming from the bacteria in the ice cubes and the sugar in the original coke helped it to grow even worse than the one on the zero side.

Makes sense that the zero mostly evaporated, as its mostly water, and the original reduced into a sludge, since its full of sugar. I was surprised by the amount of growth on the zero however. I wonder what's feeding the bacteria. Caffeine?

One cool thing about Coke Zero is that it's not sticky at all. You could spill it and it's like cleaning up colored water.

I also wonder how mould grew on it as there is no sugar.. But then also you can get mould in bathrooms or black mould near windows so that then makes me wonder what the food source is to feed these??

It contains Caramel, Phosphoric Acid, Aspartame, Acesulfame-K, Natural Flavourings and Sodium Citrates … so there is some stuff for molds to eat.

The mold build up is from a contaminated non sterile environment and outside influences most likely the ice or even a non sterile glass.For more accurate results This needs to be done in a vacuum (as mold can be air born and deposited from the surrounding air) and a more controlled sterile environment

I'd like to see something like this but with a human tooth added - what would it do to the tooth? Would the soft drink with sugar dissolve/eat away at the tooth quicker? Maybe lemonade for clearer vision :)

One time when i was very young i had a small plastic cup of coke and took it into an unused room in my house and forgot about it. A year or two later, i went into this room again and found this plastic cup with ~2cm of solid, condensed coke at the bottom. I even tried poking it with a fork and there was no budge. Safe to say, we just threw the cup out.

I once remember taking a pepsi bottle with some remaining and putting it in the balcony but the bottle was closed. The cleaners did throw it out, but it was there for like 9 months or something. It was somehow still pretty clean

Okay, I actually became very confused by the ending of this video. I think all versions of cola are basically poison. But zero could be worse because it has more chemical stuff. But whatever was left at the end of the normal cola one reeeeeeaaaaaaly makes me not want to drink that anymore. XD

@R D I don't use extra sugar at all, can't stand this sugar syrup any longer, way too sweet for me. Once you refrain from extra sugar, you'll notice every mg of it in foods. Good, you're only consuming it once per week, there was a time I'd drink up to 2l per day of this syrup, stopped drinking it also like 15 years ago like the commenter, wished I had refrained from it earlier.

My dad deliberately left an original twinkie on top of the entertainment/TV stand, for 12 years! YES, 12 YEARS...UNTOUCHED!

When you pour out an old can of non-diet soda there's almost always a little "slug" of mold waiting for ya at the bottom, but diet soda doesn't really produce the same "slug"

Seems almost pointless because they were exposed to air. Interesting that he put ice cubes in both, but more in one than the other. Any contaminants in the ice cubes would affect the outcome. Would be better to see this in a controlled environment without anything added, so it accurately represent what would actually happen based on time, and not anything that may have gotten into the Coke.
