Johnny recorded as a member of the 1980's southern rock band The Johnny Van Zant Band which released albums in 1980, 1981 and 1982. The band shortened its name to Van Zant for the release of its fourth album in 1985, the eponymous Van Zant, which saw some chart success with "You've Got to Believe in Love" and "I'm a Fighter". However, this band was not the same as the current version of Van Zant and did not include brother Donnie.
Johnny released another album under his full name in 1990, but spent most of his time in that period singing for the Lynyrd Skynyrd reunion group. He joined up with Donnie, and they revived the Van Zant name to release an album in 1998, which led to a follow up album in 2001. They have also released two albums to the country music format: 2005's Get Right with the Man and 2007's My Kind of Country. Overall, the group has had two singles on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks charts (the prior incarnation of Van Zant also had two), and six on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts.

Hey Hey Baby - what about me and you
Oh uh hey lover - say about makin plans
Hey hey hey Baby - how does this story end
Hey yes I am
I'm a want you kinda man
Gotta make you understand
That I'm a want you kinda man
Hey Baby - love's so hard to find
Play the game baby - you loose every time
And time is your melony - but the night is your friend
Were right where we suppose to be - this fight will never end
Ohh... uhh... ohh
Hey yes I am - I'm a want you kinda man

That I'm a want you kinda man
Ohuh ohuh oh

I'm a want you, I'm a need you, I'm a love you, kinda man
The Van Zant song "I'm A Want You Kinda Man" is about being in love and wanting to be with someone. The lyrics suggest a desperate need to be with the object of his affection, and the singer proclaims that he is a "want you kinda man." The first verse and chorus ask the question, "Hey Baby - what about me and you?" The second verse mentions the difficulties of finding love, but the singer is confident that he and his lover are "right where we are supposed to be" and that their love will never end. The final verse reiterates the singer's declaration of love and his need to be with his lover.
The song's lyrics are simple and straightforward, but they convey a powerful message about love and desire. The singer's urgency and passion come through in the chorus, where he proclaims that he is "a want you kinda man" and that he "gotta make you understand." The use of repetition in the song's melody and lyrics emphasizes the singer's desperation and his desire to be with his lover.
Overall, "I'm A Want You Kinda Man" is a classic love song that captures the intensity of romantic desire. The lyrics are easy to relate to, and the melody is catchy and memorable.
