The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. Most often on Last.fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.
Compilation albums, for example.
Sometimes, single releases may be credited to Various Artists when their profits are going to charity and, usually in high-profile cases, are sometimes known by a group name. Examples include Band Aid with their releases of Do They Know It's Christmas? and USA for Africa with We Are The World.
Various Artists is also an actual performance name for Torsten Pröfrock, who runs the German DIN label. Torsten performs also as Dynamo, Erosion, Resilent, Traktor besides some others. He's a good friend of Robert Henke and since the Fall of 2004, he is a member of Monolake.
Various Artists was also a short-lived Bristol punk band formed by brothers Jonjo and Robin Key (originally from Birmingham). Other members were also simultaneously in Art Objects who went on to become The Blue Aeroplanes, the latter the Key brothers also co-wrote some songs and were involved in. When Various Artists imploded, the Key brothers went on to form Either / Or.
Various Artists also appear on tracks from musical theater soundtracks, due to the nature of having many cast members on one song, as well as an ensemble in some cases.
Mi Gente
Various Artists Lyrics

yo mismo a veces no lo se'
mi madre pego un chillido
sali al reves
yo nacio de espaldas
no me importa la autoridad
cada quien con su cada cual
todo aquel que tenga
su propio asunto.
Y si quiere que le explique
pues voy a meterle el diente
yo no robo por robar
soy un pillo buena gente.
Mi onda es compartir
suplirle a usted lo que uested quiera
grutos prohibidos
mercancia barata
venga de donde venga
no me ponga tanto cuento
The lyrics of "Mi Gente" by Various Artists express a sense of self-discovery and rebellion against authority. The first verse talks about how the singer doesn't always know who they are, and how they were born backwards, suggesting that they don't conform to societal norms. They then declare that they don't care about authority and everyone should mind their own business.
In the second verse, the singer explains that they don't steal just for the sake of stealing, but rather because they're trying to make a living by sharing and providing what people want, whether it's forbidden goods or cheap merchandise. They reject the idea of government taxes on income, preferring the idea of "free enterprise" where everyone can have a fair share of the pie, even if it means living in the grey area of smuggling and illegal trade.
Overall, the song is a celebration of individuality and a rejection of societal norms and authority, promoting the idea that everyone should be able to live their lives as they choose as long as they're not harming anyone else.

Si el ritmo te lleva a mover la cabeza
Ya empezamos como es
Mi música no discrimina a nadie
Así que vamos a romper
Toda mi gente se mueve
Mira el ritmo cómo los tiene
Hago música que entretiene
El mundo nos quiere, nos quiere
Me quiere a mí
Toda mi gente se mueve
Mira el ritmo cómo los tiene
Hago música que entretiene
Mi música los tiene fuerte bailando
Y se baila así
Tamo' rompiendo la discoteca
La fiesta no para, apenas comienza
C'est comme-ci, c'est comme ça
