Venus Hum released their self titled debut through Mono-Fi Music on April 24th of 2001.
Their first Major Label full-length album, Big Beautiful Sky, was released April 1st, 2003 through MCA. That same year, Venus Hum toured with and opened for Blue Man Group; Annette sang vocals on "I Feel Love".
In 2004 Venus Hum released their Songs for Superheros EP, a collaboration with television producer J J Abrahms. However, Annette had developed immensely painful vocal nodes and had to see a speech pathologist to relearn her singing ability.
2006 saw the release of The Colors in the Wheel which features an edgier sound from their previous work.

Surgery in the Sky
Venus Hum Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Digging into something you haven't figured out,
Weighed it on the scale,
Bona fide, and so...
La da da dee da da da dee-da, oh
La da da dee da da da dee-da, oh
La da da dee da da da dee-da, oh, oh, oh
[Refrain]
You lift your arm, try to catch a star,
It fell down your sleeve and cut your heart,
You believe it will leave a lovely scar,
This surgery in the sky.
[/Refrain]
Oh, you can't hide what you hold,
Stick it in the middle, ah-aaah, oh, get it out,
Bona fide splinter, bona fide seeker...
[refrain 2x]
La da da, da da da, oh
La da da, da da da, oh
La da da, da da da, oh, oh, oh
[refrain]
And you lift your arm try to catch a star,
It fell down your sleeve and cut your heart,
And you bleed at night on your countertop,
From this surgery in the sky
[refrain]
La da da dee da da da dee-da, oh [7x]
The lyrics of Venus Hum's song "Surgery in the Sky" speak about the process of discovering something new and unknown, without being entirely sure of what that something represents. The song metaphorically compares this experience to undergoing a surgery in the sky, where one's heart is cut by a falling star, leaving a beautiful scar. The first verse speaks about waking up to a situation where one is excavating something that is currently completely unclear, they are digging into it, and weighing it on the scale, but still haven't figured it out. The repetition of the phrase "Bona fide," emphasizes that this experience is authentic and genuine.
The refrain of the song is where the metaphor of the surgery in the sky becomes most evident. The singer lifts their arm to catch a star but instead, it falls down their sleeve and cuts their heart. This experience, which would typically be painful, is viewed as an opportunity to leave something beautiful behind, represented by the "lovely scar". It's a reminder that sometimes life's painful experiences can lead to something beautiful in the end.
Overall, "Surgery in the Sky" is a song about embracing the unknown, exploring the uncertain situations that enter our lives, and recognizing the beauty that can come from difficulty.
