Mayday
Verneri Pohjola UMO Jazz Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Pelkään enemmän kuin milloinkaan
Jos mikään ei muuttuiskaan
Sataisi ylhäältä lämpimästi
Voisi jäädä
Jäädä tänne pysyvästi

Talot tummuvat sateella
Ootan tulvaa täällä laaksossa
Kiivetään vuorelle valoja katsomaan
Onko kaikki
Kaikki vielä paikallaan

Toisinaan sattuu ja toisinaan ei
Hiljainen hätähuuto mayday
En tahdo ystävää kadottaa
Joka jaksaa
Jaksaa vielä odottaa

Toisinaan sattuu ja toisinaan ei
Hiljainen hätähuuto mayday
En tahdo ystävää kadottaa

Joka jaksaa
Jaksaa vielä odottaa

Overall Meaning

In "Mayday," Verneri Pohjola and UMO Jazz Orchestra explore themes of fear, hope, and the unpredictability of life through their lyrics. The opening lines express a deep anxiety, with the singer admitting that they are more scared than ever before, and they fear that nothing will change. However, the imagery of warm rain falling from above creates a glimmer of hope, and leads the singer to contemplate the idea of staying in one place permanently.

The second verse shifts to a description of a stormy valley, where the singer waits for a flood. The idea of climbing a mountain to look for light suggests that the singer is searching for a guiding force in their life, perhaps a metaphor for a friend or loved one that they don't want to lose. The chorus emphasizes the theme of unpredictability, acknowledging that sometimes things go wrong and other times they don't. The plea not to lose a friend who is still waiting and hoping suggests perseverance in the face of uncertainty.

Overall, "Mayday" is a reflective and introspective song that explores both the darker and lighter sides of human emotion. The lyrics express a sense of vulnerability and uncertainty, but are ultimately hopeful in their belief that things can get better.

Part II of a ten piece suite ,"Agatha", for Umo Jazz Orchestra (big band & solo trumpet). Written 2007, this just turns ten (although this particular composition is from before, the Ultra Bra days). They just had Agatha re-released first time on vinyl and also played a couple of gigs last week to celebrate. Was great.

There's a better known of this by the group he started (which disbanded in 2001), Ultra Bra, with words. It's about the large Helsinki-Vantaa regional airport in Finland.
