During the past decade, Loiri's career has moved in the direction of music instead of acting. He has recorded several albums and recorded many cover versions and interpretations, such as an album series from the poems of Eino Leino. Loiri's first album took place in 1971.
In 2006 he released Ivalo, which started an acoustic cover album trilogy somewhat reminiscent of Johnny Cash's American recordings. The following albums in the series are Inari, released in November 2007, and Kasari, released in November 2008, all three recorded in Lapponian landscapes. Loiri has speculated retirement from recording after the release of Kasari.
With over 753 000 albums sold, he is the 5th most successful Finnish solo artist.
Vesa-Matti Loiri received the Finnish music industry's Emma-award for best male solo act in 2007.
Loiri is also known as an athlete and was the head of Finnish Billiards Association between 1994-1999.
AURORA

Ja seitsemän pimeää majakkaa
Tämä tuntematon
Mentävä on
Sielua piinaa ikävä loputon
Kauriin kääntöpiirin taa
Kohti viimeistä rantaa
Ja kivussa kantaa
Oi, Aurora
Kaikkiko katoaa
Oi, Aurora
Etkö jättäisi vähän valoa
Kun tuuli kääntyy koiliseen
Aaltoihin lasken seppeleen
Kristallisen
Maljani viimeisen
Menneelle täytän ja kumoan sen
Kauriin kääntöpiirin taa
Kohti viimeistä rantaa
Vuorovedet miestä kuljettaa
Ja kivussa kantaa
Oi, Aurora
Kaikkiko katoaa
Oi, Aurora
Etkö jättäisi vähän valoa
Tähän pelossa kuljin
Etsin syvääkin syvemmän haudan
Rautakahleet arkkuun suljin
Pyhän totuuden polttoraudan
Oi, Aurora
Kaikkiko katoaa
Oi, Aurora
Etkö jättäisi
Oi, Aurora
Kaikkiko katoaa
Oi, Aurora
Etkö jättäisi vähän valoa
The lyrics of Vesa-Matti Loiri's song "Aurora" portray the feeling of longing for light and hope in the midst of a dark and unknown journey. The opening lines suggest a treacherous journey across seven seas and seven dark lighthouses, with a profound sense of missing someone or something that cannot be easily described or overcome. The song expresses the desire to find a way towards a distant shore, carried by the ebb and flow of the tides despite the pain of the journey.
The chorus, addressed to the mythical figure of Aurora, the goddess of dawn, pleads for her to leave a little light for the traveler to find his way. The use of Aurora as a symbol is significant, as it represents the hope for new beginnings and a fresh start. The second verse reflects on the idea of leaving a final offering to the past, accepting the loss, and letting go. In the end, the song comes to a close with the repetition of the chorus, failing to offer a clear resolution, but leaving the listener with the same feeling of hope and expectancy as at the beginning.
