Tell Me What to Do
Vic Meyers And His Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Funniest pair of eyes I've ever seen.
Funny I can't get wise to what they mean.
I wish that I could understand the things you say.
Each time I try to go, you seem to make me stay.

Maybe it's just because you like to flirt.
Maybe you want to see my feelings hurt.
You've got me round and round you like a child.
Someday you're going to drive me wild.

So what do you want to make those eyes at me for
When they don't mean what they say?
They make me glad.
They make me sad.
They make me want a lot of things I'll never have.
So what do you want to fool around with me for?
You lead me on and then you run away.
But never mind,
I'll get you alone some night
And then you'll surely find
You're flirting with dynamite.
So what do you want to make those eyes at me for
When they don't mean what they say?

What do you want to make those eyes at me for
When they don't mean what they say?
They make me glad.
They make me sad.
They make me want a lot of things I never had.
So what do you want to fool around with me for?
You lead me on and then you run away.
But never mind
I'll get you alone some night
And then you'll surely find
You're flirting with dynamite.
So what you want to make those eyes at me for
When they don't mean what they say?

When they don't mean what they say.
When they don't mean what they say.

Overall Meaning

The song "Tell Me What to Do" by Vic Meyers and His Orchestra is essentially about the confusion one faces when someone they're interested in sends mixed signals. The first stanza introduces the listener to the funny yet confusing pair of eyes that he or she sees. The singer wishes to understand the things that the person he or she is interested in says, but there seems to be a struggle in actually comprehending their meaning. With each attempt to leave, the person receiving the mixed signals gets drawn back in by the conflicting messages.

The second stanza explores the many reasons why the person sending the mixed signals may be doing so. Perhaps they enjoy flirting or have intentions of causing harm to the emotions of the person interested in them (i.e., "Maybe you want to see my feelings hurt"). Despite the reasons behind the mixed signals, the singer continues to be drawn in and expresses a desire to have what he or she cannot have.

Overall, "Tell Me What to Do" is a song that explores the confusion and emotional turmoil that can occur when someone sends mixed signals. It touches on the desire for understanding and the struggle of letting go of someone you're interested in but can't have.

Real nice trumpet/cornet solo, muted, by one of the two trumpet/cornet players, at 1:00. Thank you so much for sharing such a hot side!!! :^D 🎺 LP

His is an interesting one, Nick. Although I know nothing about Vic Meyers, I do have, buried deeply somewhere, a record by "Meyers dance orchestra" on the Perfect label (I honestly cannot remember the title). Its an acoustic recording from about the same period. Would this be the same band?

Nick Dellow

Hi Mark, Meyers Dance Orchestra on English Perfect is a pseudonym covering several American dance bands (California Ramblers, Sam Lanin, Peter Van Steeden, Lou Gold, etc.); there is no connection to Vic Meyers, as far as I am aware.

Mark Thompson

@Nick Dellow Ah.Ok. Thanks.

C Porter

@Nick Dellow Meyer's Dance Orchestra, Meyer's Orchestra, etc variations may have been pseudos' for those, but they were also some of the MANY many Meyer Davis society/dance bands, (by 1930 or so there was about 60 across the East Coast)
