Young Folks
Victoria Bergsman Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If I told you things I did before
Told you how I used to be
Would you go along with someone like me?
If you knew my story word for word
Had all of my history
Would you go along with someone like me?

I did before and had my share
It didn't lead nowhere
I would go along with someone like you
It doesn't matter what you did
Who you were hanging with
We could stick around and see this night through

And we don't care about the young folk
Talkin' 'bout the young style
And we don't care about the old folks
Talkin' 'bout the old style too
And we don't care about their own faults
Talkin' 'bout our own style
All we care 'bout is talking
Talking only me and you

Usually when things has gone this far
People tend to disappear
No one will surprise me unless you do

I can tell there's something goin' on
Hours seems to disappear
Everyone is leaving; I'm still with you

It doesn't matter what we do
Where we are going to
We can stick around and see this night through

And we don't care about the young folk
Talkin' 'bout the young style
And we don't care about the old folks
Talkin' 'bout the old style too
And we don't care about their own faults
Talkin' 'bout our own style
All we care 'bout is talking
Talking only me and you

And we don't care about the young folk
Talkin' 'bout the young style
And we don't care about the old folks
Talkin' 'bout the old style too
And we don't care about their own faults
Talkin' 'bout our own style
All we care 'bout is talking
Talking only me and you

Talking only me and you

Talking only me and you
Talking only me and you

Overall Meaning

Victoria Bergsman's song "Young Folks" is an indie pop hit that explores the possibility of genuine connection - regardless of age and past mistakes. The lyrics suggest that if the singer were to share their past experiences and all of their history, would the listener still go along with them? The refrain of "And we don't care about the young folk/Talkin' 'bout the young style/And we don't care about the old folks/Talkin' 'bout the old style too/And we don't care about their own faults/Talkin' 'bout our own style" emphasizes the idea that the two individuals in conversation only care about talking to each other, regardless of the opinions of others.

The song's repeating refrain and catchy whistling make it a memorable tune that has been used in various TV shows and films, including How I Met Your Mother, 27 Dresses, and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. The song's music video also gained attention for its unique animation style and portrayal of Bergsman and collaborator Peter Bjorn as bobblehead figures.

Jonas A This is more indie pop/rock than indie pop but here it is. Before Spotify, I used to discover music through a Songza playlist called Retro Indie Rock (R.I.P, anyone remember that?), BIRP playlists and Hipster guest DJs on Sirius XMU. Asterisks are songs you can’t find on Spotify. I think this period of indie music had too much REVERB and twangy guitars lol but I love it.

This song would be top charts if released today...it's timeless.

das 1988

Many songs that were at the top of the charts in the past if released today you could say the same.

@Alexis Girardot The response to this comment is unexpected!

@chisun1978 It's not a bad song. I really need to see the new Top Gun! It's a weird song to be on the Top Gun soundtrack, no?

chisun1978

@Alexis Girardot 😂
I agree, the girl singing in this version is not as good. I actually didn’t fully listen to this live version. It’s bad. Just replying to the comment. I was mainly referring to the recorded album version where I see the similarities more. I am just wondering if the one republic writer was inspired by this song or was subconsciously influenced 🤷🏻‍♂️

Alexis Girardot

@chisun1978I see the similarities but I disagree, everything in the song you mentioned is quite different honestly but something is sure, in this video, the woman's voice is horrible she sounds like absolutely nothing it's horrific

The other day I was walking around a large and very busy garden centre when someone out of sight started whistling this song. I started whistling it back. This went on for several minutes and we didn't actually see each other but was fun just the same.

Ahh, the glory days of indie pop, rock and folk.
