DON'T FEAR THE REAPER
Ville Valo/HIM Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

All our times have come. Here, but now they're gone.

Seasons don't fear the reaper
Nor do the wind, the sun or the rain
We can be like they are
(Come on, Baby) Don't fear the reaper
(Baby, take my hand) Don't fear the reaper
(We'll be able to fly) Don't fear the reaper
(Baby, I'm your man)

La La La La La...
La La La La La...

Valentine is done. Here, but now they're gone.

Romeo and Juliet
Are together in eternity
Romeo and Juliet
(40,000 men and women every day) Like Romeo and Juliet
(40,000 men and women every day) Redefine happiness
(Another 40,000 comin' every day) We can be like they are
(Come on, Baby) Don't fear the reaper
(Baby, take my hand) Don't fear the reaper
(We'll be able to fly) Don't fear the reaper
(Baby, I'm your man)

La La La La La...
La La La La La...

Love of two is one. Here, but now they're gone.

He came last night, out of sadness
And it was clear that we couldn't go on
The the door was open and the wind appeared
The candles blew and then disappeared
The curtains flew and then he appeared
(Saying don't be afraid) Come on, Baby
(And we had no fear) And we ran to him
(Then we started to fly) We looked backward and said goodbye
We had become like they are (We had taken his hand)

We had become like they are (Come on, Baby)
Don't fear the reaper

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to HIM's "Don't Fear The Reaper" is a cover of the original song released by Blue Öyster Cult in the 1970s. The song is about death or the "reaper" and how it is a natural part of life that should not be feared. The opening lines "all our times have come, here but now they're gone" suggest that everything has a season, and nothing lasts forever. The lyrics also touch on the idea that nature does not fear the reaper, as the wind, sun, and rain continue to function normally despite death being a natural part of life.

The song mentions the story of Romeo and Juliet, who are together in eternity, proving that love can transcend death. The line "Valentine is done, here but now they're gone" suggests that love is fleeting and can end suddenly. The lyrics also talk about the idea that death can bring a sense of peace or release from sadness, as referenced in the lines "he came last night, out of sadness, and it was clear that we couldn't go on." Ultimately, the song tells listeners not to fear death, as it is a part of the natural cycle of life and can bring peace and relief from suffering.

Always loved the last verse!
"Came a last night of sadness
And it was clear she couldn't go on!
The door was opened and the wind appeared
The candles blew and then disappeared
The curtains flew and then he appeared
Saying "Don't be afraid,
"Come on, Baby"
And she had no fear
And she ran to him
And they started to fly
She had taken his hand
They looked backward and said "Goodbye"
She had become like they are
She had taken his hand
She had become like they are
Come on, Baby, don't fear the reaper"

Blackest Blood

I have a dear to me childhood friend who was murdered by her boyfriend two years ago. We had the greatest times growing up. One such memory was hanging out in her room and she was playing this song. She always adored me and thought highly of me even if i didn't deserve it. Now later in life and friends are scarce. Now i see the huge heart she had. I miss her terribly and she can never be replaced.

I came here because of the coronavirus but then I saw your comment and it broke my heart. Losing a loved one is heartbreaking. My condolences.

My heart goes out to you

I showed this song to a friend who passed in a car accident. I think I remember asking if I should cover it, and she just told me to do what my heart wants. I really relate to this story in a way. She was kind of my unofficial therapist and best friend. I didnt know how, she was the opposite of me in almost every way, politically, musically, and everything. But she was just damn smart, and I like those people. She taught me so many lessons with ease and careness. It really opened my eyes as to how you need to treat someone. Always cared for me, checked in on me. Now I wanna be where she is, you could say. Songs just have the ability to build unbreakable bridges that can extend into eternity

Unpopular opinion but Greatest Love Songs Vol. 666 was the best album HIM released. Still listen it every single day even after so many years.
