Machinery
Warhaus Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I offered before what i'm offering again
I don't claim to know why
I should change a thing
I don't claim to be sober
I don't claim to be right
I don't claim to be anything
Except yours to consume tonight
And now the machinery won't let you go
Congratulations
And now the machinery won't let you go
Congratulations

Divide yourself up to valium and ...
Divide yourself up to the sober and the drunk
Divide yourself up to the old and the new
Divide yourself up to beauty and the truth

And now the machinery won't let you go
Congratulations
And now the machinery won't let you go
Congratulations

And now the machinery won't let you go
Congratulations

And now the machinery won't let you go
Congratulations

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Warhaus's song "Machinery" are a commentary on modern society and how people are consumed by machinery, both literally and figuratively. The first verse speaks to the idea of being consumed by someone or something, offering oneself up to consume without claiming to be anything in particular. The following verses broaden the theme to a more general sense of being consumed by society, as reflected in the lines "divide yourself up", which can be interpreted as society's need to categorize and compartmentalize individuals.

The chorus repeats the statement "the machinery won't let you go" with a tone of congratulation, as if acknowledging that being consumed by the machinery is something to strive for, or at least something that cannot be avoided. The line "the machinery won't let you go" can also be interpreted literally, as in the machinery controlling people's lives or actions to the point where they cannot escape.

Overall, the lyrics of "Machinery" reveal a commentary on the effects of modern society and how people are becoming increasingly consumed by technology and societal constructs, to the point where they are losing their individuality and freedom.

I can compare you to many artists I love: Leonard Cohen, Stuart Staples, Nick Cave, Tom Waits, Gilbert Becaud... It's simply because there have been SO MANY great musicians in this world so far.
But I can never mistake you for any of them, and that's a great thing. It's what makes you YOU. :)
I don't often buy full albums online, but I bought yours. I love it so much.
