Watson & Nash have worked together in both a writing and performing capacity for almost a decade. The two met around 2001 while Shay was speaking on songwriting at a workshop in Nashville, TN. At the time, Joe was writing, performing and producing while living in West Virgina. The two struck up a friendship and with Shay's encouragement, Joe soon made a move to Nashville. At that time, Shay was touring with his own band Ten Mile Drive. Joe began working on a solo career and kept ties to Shay, working with him on occasional projects. A few years passed, Shay's band had come to an end and after a brief solo run, he and Joe, who had continued to work on his songwriting and artistry, began discussing the idea of putting together a duo. The duo idea morphed into a band in 2007 with several other talented players and artists. After a brief run the group disbanded. Shay and Joe, however, continued to work and perform together and refine the original idea of forming a duo.

Bring It On
Watson and Nash Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
With the lorries rolling by
Blue moon sinking from the weight of the load
And the building scrape the sky
Cold wind ripping down the alley at dawn
And the morning paper flies
Dead man lying by the side of the road
With the daylight in his eyes
Don't let it bring you down
It's only castles burning
Find someone who's turning
And you will come around
Blind man running through the light of the night
With an answer in his hand
Come on down to the river of sight
And you can really understand
Red lights flashing through
The window in the rain
Can you hear the sirens moan
White cane lying in a gutter in the lane
If you're walking home alone
The first verse of Watson and Nash's song "Bring It On" paints a picture of a desolate and harsh setting, where an old man is sitting by the side of the road with lorries rolling by, a blue moon sinking from the weight of a heavy load, and the buildings scraping the sky. The cold wind is ripping down the alley at dawn, and the morning paper flies. Amidst all this, a dead man is lying by the side of the road with the daylight in his eyes. The imagery evoked in this verse is that of a bleak and dystopian world where people are struggling to survive amidst an unforgiving urban environment.
The chorus then encourages the listener to remain hopeful and not let these tough circumstances bring them down. The singer advises one to seek out someone who is "turning", meaning someone who is positive and optimistic, and to surround themselves with such people. The metaphor of "castles burning" signifies that sometimes things may fall apart, but it's important to keep moving forward and find hope amidst the ashes.
The second verse describes a blind man running through the light of the night with an answer in his hand. The lyrics urge the listener to come to the river of sight and truly understand. The red lights flashing through the window in the rain and the sound of sirens moaning suggest a sense of chaos and danger. The song ends with the image of a white cane lying in a gutter in the lane, a symbol of vulnerability, and the suggestion that it's not safe to walk home alone. The song is about finding hope in a world that can sometimes be harsh and unforgiving.
