Under a Rock
Waxahatchee Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I got to you, imparting
Now you're someone else's mess tonight
And I got upset, I told you twice
That I know how to break inside
The brick house that you built around your cranium
Maybe I let on that I was interested
In your brand of lonely
A book you cracked once and never read
Your ravenous, insatiable
Appetite for the expendable
Will leave you just as hollow as your requiem
You'll bang it like a drum
The lyrics of Waxahatchee's song Under a Rock delve into the emotions of a person who is dealing with rejection and unrequited love. The first verse suggests that the person they were interested in has moved on and is now involved with someone else. The phrase "Maybe you got your head caught in a ditch last night" implies that the person was not in their senses or was in a vulnerable state when they got involved with someone else. The singer feels upset and reveals that they know how to break through the tough exterior the person has built around themselves.
In the second verse, the lyrics suggest that the person the singer was interested in was not really interested in them but only liked the idea of being lonely. The person kept the singer at an arm's length and never really opened up to them. The singer describes the person's appetite for the expendable, which suggests that the person is seeking temporary fixations rather than genuine connections that last. The lyrics end with "You'll bang it like a drum," indicating that the person will continue to seek these temporary pleasures but will be left feeling hollow.
Overall, the song's lyrics showcase the singer's frustration and disappointment with the person they were interested in. The person's emotional distance and focus on temporary pleasures leave the singer feeling rejected and unimportant. The tone of the song is melancholic, and the lyrics convey the singer's emotional turmoil.
