We Are The Emergency is a band that fall into a distinct minority. Their peers may be content sitting around and waiting for the paint to dry, but the Perth six-piece have carved a solid name for themselves using nothing more than a tireless work ethic and unbreakable determination. They have proven themselves to be one of Australia’s most promising prospects, and on the eve of the release of their debut album Whispers & Fragments, We Are The Emergency is about to go from promise to powerhouse.
From day one, We Are The Emergency has proven that they’re not interested in doing things by half measures, flying themselves halfway across the world to record their self-funded debut release, the Seizure EP. Recorded by Kris Crummet (Dance Gavin Dance, Closure In Moscow), Seizure promptly marked the entrance of a band who were here to stay, and quickly garnered the band a sturdy reputation.
Within months of its’ release, We Are The Emergency were gaining steady momentum by supporting the likes of Bleeding Through, House Vs. Hurricane, Behind Crimson Eyes and The Getaway Plan, and their hard-work resulted in the growth of their own die-hard fanbase, This hard work in their home city of Perth then translated into Australia-wide recognition, with two national tours capping off what was a very impressive 2009.
2010 has already proven to be full steam ahead for We Are The Emergency. Having already played alongside As I Lay Dying, Short Stack and Closure In Moscow, the WATE camp also began the process of recording their debut album Whispers & Fragments. This time flying Kris Crummet from Portland to Australia, WATE locked themselves away in a beach-house in the picturesque South-West of WA, and didn’t surface until the job was done.
The end result is 12 tracks of powerful and emotional rock, that sees We Are The Emergency take on a much more mature and overall impressive sound, with song-writing and production of the highest quality. Debut albums can make or break a band, but Whispers & Fragments is set to ensure that all of the hype that surrounds We Are The Emergency is well and truly justified.
We Are The Emergency launched Whispers & Fragments on May 8th 2010 and 9th at Amplifier Bar and HQ Leederville respectively.

We Are The Emergency Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Here alongside hand in hand
The lovers' feet entwining {entwining}
Left soft impressions in the sand
You know they were happy here not long ago
You know they were happy here not long ago
You know they were happy here not long ago
And so I find I'm tracing
Steps of two people
Two people I'll never know
You know they were happy here not long ago
You know they were happy here not long ago
You know they were happy here not long ago
You know they were happy here not very long ago
Watching coastlines slip and fade away
And I'm coming home alone
Knowing city lights will take its place
When star lit tapestries are gone
You know they were happy here not long ago
You know they were happy here not very long ago
Watching coastlines slip and fade away
And I'm coming home alone
Knowing city lights will take its place
When star lit tapestries are gone
The lyrics of "Footsteps" by We Are The Emergency describe the feeling of walking along a beach and seeing the traces of footsteps left by two people who were happy together but are now gone. The singer describes how the footprints in the sand seem to tell a story of two lovers walking hand in hand, their feet entwined, and how he feels like he is tracing their steps even though he doesn't know them. He repeats the phrase "You know they were happy here not long ago" to emphasize the contrast between how things were for the couple in the past and how they are now.
The second verse continues this exploration of contrasts by juxtaposing the natural beauty of the coastline with the loneliness of the singer. He watches as the coast fades away and knows that he will soon be surrounded by the artificial light of the city. The reference to "star lit tapestries" creates an image of the night sky as a work of art that is being gradually replaced by the gray monotony of the urban landscape.
Overall, the lyrics of "Footsteps" convey a sense of nostalgia for a time and place that was once filled with happiness and beauty, but is now empty and lonely. The focus on physical details such as the footprints in the sand and the changing landscapes emphasizes the transience of human experiences and how they are constantly being overwritten by new ones.
