I'm A Believer
Weezer Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I thought love was
Only true in fairy tales
Meant for someone else
But not for me
Love was out to get to me
That's the way it seems
Disappointment haunted
All my dreams

And then I saw her face
Now I'm a believer
Not a trace
Of doubt in my mind
I'm in love
I'm a believer
I couldn't leave her
If I tried

I thought love was
More or less a given thing
The more I gave the less
I got, oh yeah
What's the use in trying
All you get is pain
When I wanted sunshine
I got rain

And then I saw her face
Now I'm a believer
Not a trace
Of doubt in my mind
I'm in love
I'm a believer
I couldn't leave her
If I tried

What's the use in trying
All you get is pain
When I wanted sunshine
I got rain

And then I saw her face
Now I'm a believer
Not a trace
Of doubt in my mind
I'm in love
I'm a believer
I couldn't leave her
If I tried

Then I saw her face
Now I'm a believer
Not a trace
Of doubt in my mind
Now I'm a believer
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah
I'm a believer
Then I saw her face
I'm a believer
Not a trace

Of doubt in my mind
I'm a believer

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Weezer's song "I'm A Believer" speak to the experience of finally overcoming skepticism toward love after experiencing disappointment and heartbreak. The first verse presents a pessimistic attitude toward love as something that only exists in fairy tales and is meant for others, not for the singer. They feel like love is out to get them, haunting their dreams with disappointment. However, the second verse describes an even more jaded outlook on love, where the singer believes that the more love they give, the less they receive in return. The last line of the verse, "When I wanted sunshine, I got rain," captures the sense of disillusionment that the singer feels.

But then, the chorus introduces a turning point in the singer's perspective on love. They claim that after seeing "her" face, they are now a believer, with no doubt in their mind about their love for this person. The repetition of the phrase "I'm a believer" speaks to the strength of this newfound conviction. The last verse is a repetition of the second verse, but with a different tone - this time, the singer knows that struggling for love is worth it because of the joy and certainty it can bring.

Overall, the song has a nostalgic and optimistic feel, with a driving beat and memorable chorus that make it a catchy pop-rock hit.

I think the vocals in Smash Mouth’s cover are better, but the instrumentals from this are amazing

@@cooperlumsden2131 thanks!

@musicfun2606

Fantastic rendition. But Micky Dolenz cannot be out done. His voice was magic. He is a severely underrated vocalist, The Monkees a severely underrated band. However, Rivers Cuomo also fits into that category. Weezer is the best band of the last 30 years.

@mrsixiesrock2274

+John Stout It's not a Monkees song it's a Neil Diamond song, The Monkees version is a cover

@bradleybrussell2473

Yes it is !! listen carefully, I think it's the same (guild, by the sound of it) acoustic guitar as on "cherry" ...; Diamond's allegedly "favorite" instrument, and I can understand why !!

@jimothy_7255

i agree. try Robert Wyatt top of the pops cover for a less traditional cover too
