SUMMER
Wheat Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hey kid, it's summer again
Grow your hair and let your muscles show through
You've been sleeping all summer long

Smoking pot with your train track friends
Close your eyes and let the music carry you
Like some tail gate birthday song
Heaven held the shoe that fits you now
And your parking lot love
Never do
Anything
For you now

Hey kid, you already knew
When you dropped off that waitress that you
You'd be eating all by yourself

Some tens are better than fools (??)
You'll get better on the inside, outside
Salt in the water too

Heaven held the shoe that fits you now
And your parking lot love
Never do

Anything
For you now

Overall Meaning

The Wheat song "Summer" is a introspective and somewhat melancholic take on the titular season. The lyrics mainly address a young man, advising him to embrace his youth and enjoy the easy pleasures of summertime. The opening lines encourage him to let his hair grow and show off his muscles, implying a sort of carefree enjoyment of his body and physicality. However, the following lines paint a more aimless and unproductive picture of the singer's summer, as he spends it sleeping and smoking pot with friends instead of pursuing any particular goals or interests.

The chorus of the song brings in a more poetic and abstract element, as it describes "Heaven" as holding a "shoe" that perfectly fits the singer at this moment of his life. The meaning of this metaphor is not immediately clear, but it could suggest a sense of predestination or fate guiding the singer's choices and experiences.

The second verse continues to emphasize the fleetingness and transience of the summer season and the singer's youth. He drops off a waitress, perhaps indicating a casual or brief romantic encounter, and is left to eat alone. The line "some tens are better than fools" is difficult to interpret, but could refer to the idea that some experiences, even if they are not perfect or ideal, are still better than making no effort at all.

Overall, the song captures a bittersweet and wistful vibe, with the singer recognizing the value of enjoying the present moment but also acknowledging the passing of time and the uncertainty of the future.

In particular the first half of this record is fantastic. I really liked about half of Hope & Adams too, and they really started to lose me with Per Second (x4) Every Second. I had given up by the time "Every day I said a prayer and made a one inch square for Kathy" or whatever that was called. I remember getting to see the Blake Babies in '01 for the reunion tour which was like seeing the Who at Woodstock for me and being blown away by Wheat.

To me, Wheat is one of those bands that gets better with age. I wasn't the biggest fan of Per Second... but I didn't dislike it either. I've been a fan and friends with the band for many years though, so I may be a bit biased.
