Voice In the Wind
While Heaven Wept Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I hear your voice in the wind
Haunting me once again

Maybe our dream is over
But the sorrow never ends

I hear your voice in the wind
Haunting me once again

I knew someday you would leave
And abandon me to forever grieve

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of While Heaven Wept's song "Voice In the Wind" describe the haunting melody of a voice heard in the wind that resurrects memories of a lost love. The song speaks to the bittersweet pain of nostalgia, where even though the singer may know their dream of being with this person is no longer possible, they still grieve the loss. The lyrics convey the idea that while one may try to move on, the emotions associated with the past will always linger on, as highlighted in the lines "Maybe our dream is over, but the sorrow never ends."

Additionally, the lines "I knew someday you would leave, and abandon me to forever grieve," suggest a sense of inevitability in the singer's loss, perhaps implying that this relationship was doomed from the start with the ending being inevitable. Overall, the song is a poignant reflection on the power of memories and the enduring nature of grief.

This is one of the best covers I've ever heard (well, I'm referring primarily to the studio recording, which is mindblowing). The original Jane song doesn't really work, because the vocal melodies don't seem to fit with the music. WHW reworked the vocals and made it into THEIR song. Great job, guys.

Damn - very gracious thanks - albeit years late... "Voice" was a labor of love - we've never really been a cover band because I have always felt that unless you can really make it your own, why mess with perfection? Most covers tend to be a disservice if not an outright bastardization - but then you've got Hendrix, Metallica, etc who made songs their own. In this case, I loved the original - and it was suggested that our sound was similar to Jane and Novalis early on... anyway, the feeling of this song resonated in particular, and given Jane really never were known outside of Germany, this was a tribute at heart - wanting to make more people aware of their awesome music (especially 1975-78), to keep it alive. We did our best to retain the starkness of the original, but the whole premise of WHW is to keep it real - so lyrically and vocally, it had to be something personally relevant, something sincere. We hold no claim to this song - what we've done is in fact the Jane song - simply slightly re-arranged...though, the vocal melodies and guitar solos are 100% WHW. Perhaps it's best thought of as a "mash up" long before that was a thing...but, yeah, it was my "baby" on the "Empires" album, and always a highlight of the live sets!
