@TravelerInTraining there are traps (such as the Mortimer) that severely damage your position if you opponent doesn't fall for them. And then there are traps that arise from making logical moves from common early game positions (like the fishing pole). I'm more of a fan of the latter.

I think this video is most useful to teach black how to properly defend scholar's mate attempts. As white, you really shouldn't be attempting to scholar's mate people because, when your attack fails, your position ends up being completely unsound and you end up playing a game that doesn't strengthen your fundamentals. If you're looking for opening traps as a beginner, I would recommend reviewing trapping lines that arise from common book positions.

I think there is one more attack after Black Knight to F6, which is Queen to B3. Depending on Black's next move, they would loose at least one knight in exchange for the White Bishop. Coach Kestoy, your thoughts on that strategy?

You shouldnt try to do them every game, Just play normally and if your opponent does do a move which helps in your trap then only carry on with the trapmotherwise play normally.

I fell for this about 3 times and got so frustrated that I went on YouTube to search for it...it's called the Scholars Mate, Wayward Queen or Parham Attack. There is a great counter to this, if the Queen goes to B3, supporting an attack by the Bishop after moving from F3. It forks the Queen, Rook and King. I studied up and when I saw it again, I destroyed my opponent. :-)

LOL! I've never tried to set this trap and I fell for this trap maybe a half dozen times. Thanks for this video. It reinforces what I have learned through a more difficult process. Now I need to learn how to play the resultant KIDish position Black is left with. Thanks again!

This opening is commonly known as the wayward queen attack. After qh5, the best move for black is kc6. I like this trap, but it generally only works on beginners.

Ketony, you missed the last line, after Queen goes to f3 and blck knight delopes, white Queen can move to b3 square. Then what will be the best move from black's POV? You must mention that.

What level does this work at? Sub 1500? My best rating was around 1400, I'm at 1100-1200 though now as people have got better and thus ratings have generally decreased by knowledge comparison in rating as the sport has advanced and people have on average become better.

@Tristan Lederer lol this trap works for people who are starting to learn chess. If you are a 500 rated lichess or chess.com player, he would obivious know what you are doing. Try playing stafford gambit, queen's gambit, scilian accelerated drag , caro kann or even a rare awesome checkmate line legal's mate.

Queen is weirdly placed on e7, it's better to play Nc6 and develop naturally. Would you play Qe7 if white didn't play Qh5? No! But, you might play Nc6. So developing normally while defending against all the threats seems to be best.
