Love Ain't No Stranger
Whitesnake - Slide It In 1984 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

Who knows where the cold wind blows
I ask my friends, but, nobody knows
Who am I to believe in love
Oh, love ain't no stranger

I looked around and what did I see
Broken hearted people staring at me
All searching 'cause they still believe
Oh, love ain't no stranger

I was alone and I needed love
So much I sacrificed all I was dreaming of
I heard no warning, but, a heart can tell
I'd feel the emptiness of love I know so well

Love ain't no stranger
I ain't no stranger
Love ain't no stranger
I ain't no stranger to love, no, no, no

Can't hold the passion of a soul in need
I look for mercy when my heart begins to bleed
I know good loving and I'm a friend of pain
But, when I read between the lines it's all the same

Love ain't no stranger
I ain't no stranger
Love ain't no stranger
I ain't no stranger to love

So who knows where the cold wind blows
I ask my friends, but, nobody knows
Who am I to believe in love
Lord, have mercy
Love ain't no stranger

I was alone and I needed love
So much I sacrificed all I was dreaming of
Can't hold the passion of a soul in need
I look for mercy when my heart begins to bleed

Love ain't no stranger
I ain't no stranger
Love ain't no stranger
I ain't no stranger to love

Love ain't no stranger

Love ain't no stranger
I ain't no stranger

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Whitesnake's "Love Ain't No Stranger" from their 1984 album "Slide It In" explore the complexity and challenges of love. The song begins with a sense of confusion and uncertainty, as the singer questions the nature of love and where it may lead. Despite seeking answers from friends, the singer finds that no one truly understands the unpredictable nature of love.

The lyrics then delve into the experiences of the singer and others who have faced heartbreak and disappointment in love. The broken-hearted individuals around the singer serve as a reminder that love is not always easy and often comes with pain and struggles. Despite this, there is a persistent belief in the power and importance of love, emphasizing that "love ain't no stranger" to those who continue to seek it.

The singer reflects on their own journey in search of love, acknowledging the sacrifices made and the challenges faced along the way. The lyrics convey a sense of vulnerability and longing for love, with the singer recognizing the emptiness that can come from unfulfilled desires and unrealized dreams.

The repeated refrain of "Love ain't no stranger, I ain't no stranger to love" reinforces the idea that despite the difficulties and hardships encountered in love, the singer remains resilient and open to its possibilities. The song ultimately highlights the universal experiences of love and heartache, emphasizing that while love may be unpredictable and at times painful, it is a fundamental part of the human experience.

Who else enjoying this Classic nearly 40 years later in 2023?

Me. Whitesnake was always one of my favorite bands from the 80's. Great songs, coverdale still at it. I enjoyed the lineup before the current one but I can't remember the guitar player name. Rememberd Doug Aldrich.

This whole album is phenomenal.

Well, there's two versions. The original English version does not include the overdubs by Sykes. It has better versions of Guilty of love and Slow and easy.
Live ain't no stranger is a little better on the USA remix, featuring overdubs by Sykes.
Most of the guitar is Met Galley, by the way. Original solo by Micky Moody, don't know if John Sykes redid the solo, just an extra rhythm guitar here.
